Review For: Meggs' History of Graphic Design by Philip B. Meggs and Alston W. Purvis (2005, Hardcover)
I bought this book for a college level graphics class. I like that it includes a lot of examples of the work of artists mentioned. I don't like that it weighs 20 pounds and I have to carry it around at school all day.

From what I understand, if you are a Visual Communications major, this book would be your bible. I am not, but I believe this to be a very helpful companion to my major and it has extensive content.
