I purchased this drill on ebay in June of 2006 in a kit. I was very impressed with this drills power to weight ratio. I am not a contractor just a DIY, handy man kind of guy. I had a battery failure within a couple of months. Makita replaced no questions asked. After about a year of use the 3rd gear started slipping while under a load, the problem just continued to get worse. The drill will only drill light material in first gear now. I still think this is a high quality drill that had a badly designed transmission. I think when a company has repeated failures on a single component the problem should be replaced or repaired free and without question. My drill is still under warranty but after 2 1/2 years and 2 hurricanes I have misplaced my receipt. Despite this failure I recently purchased 2 new makita drills. A 6349dwde 18v nicad drill kit and a BHP454 drill (tool only) to replace the BHP 451. Reviews will be forthcoming. I like to use my tools a couple of years before reviewing to give a fair and accurate review. Handyman Brad
After looking at several tools in the class of this drill I decided to buy this Makita BHP451 It has all metal gears and has a 3 speed tran. The lights in the front are very good for seeing your work. The grip of the drill is very comfortable. The only thing I don't like is the weight but when you compare it to other drills it comes in lighter still. Over all I think this drill will give many years of use for me.
I fell in love with the BHP451 and it lasted for several seasons. Like many others, my drill also failed in high geared drilling situations. Not worth fixing. I want another and will buy one. I will just use it as a backup. No hard hammerdrilling...which probably contributed to the aforementioned problem.

I bought this drill to use in the garage and around the house. I just built a new garage and used it quite a bit. It's easy to handle and the hanger is great for hanging on your tool belt while you're working. My only regret is not having two because if one is good, two is better! Happy drilling.
