A terrible script, written, it seems, by someone on acid. Characters make long speeches approaching profound thoughts and end up saying inane, presumptious generalizations in far too many words. The direction was moderately bad. Nice moments were thrown away in a scurry to reach disappointing ones.
But the ACTORS! You've never seen an actor act until they have a total turkey to work with. Three of the best we've ever seem, struggle with a script from hell. Hepburn, Brenner and Kaye are at their best saying lines that are their worst.
Good luck finding this movie. I waited 30 years to find a copy.
One of the biggest "sleepers" ever released. The movie has it all; a great plot, superb acting-especially by Danny Kaye as the Ragpicker. And the music will haunt you long after the end credits. It's one of Katherine Hepburn's best. The mock trial at the end will delight you, and enticing you to relate it to today's world problems. Enjoy it. It is pure movie magic.
I love to see an remake with an modern rewrite. This story shows how the rich abuse everyone and everything to maintain their glutinous ways.
