Movie synopsis
Tyler Perry follows up his DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN with more of his unique fusion of soapy melodrama, poetry, spirituality, romance, and raucous humor based on his popular stage play. This time around, the drama centers on a pair of half-sisters struggling to overcome the oppression of their materialistic mother (Lynn Whitfield). Weak-willed daughter Lisa (Rochelle Ayetes) is being pushed into marriage with an abusive investment banker (Blair Underwood), while Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson) is unable to trust the love of too-good-to-be-true Brian (Boris Kadjoe). It may be a bit jarring at first to veer from harrowing scenes of domestic abuse to hilarious scenes of Tyler in his dual role as the tough-talking grandma Madea (here also raising a troubled foster kid) and her flatulent brother Joe, but it works, especially when Cicely Tyson and poet Maya Angelou show up as old relatives at the reunion; their powerful presence provides the weight to anchor everything down. Hearing Tyson pour her heart out while addressing the young people at the reunion from the porch of an old slave shack--Angelou at her side--is an unforgettably moving experience. This is the work of a daringly original comedian and filmmaker; fearlessly confrontational and generous of heart (without being corny), MADEA is three kinds of great: gut-bustingly funny, socially progressive, and genuinely inspiring.

Southern Family Values At Their Best

Review For: Madea's Family Reunion (DVD, 2006, Full Screen)

Southern family values show their value in this wonderful movie by Tyler Perry. Tyler demonstrates what makes southern families so tight. Madea demonstrates tough love on family members as well as a foster child. The intricate lives that the entire family leads all come to light during the trials of life. Lisa is having to deal with an abusive fiance. Vanessa deals with past abuse as she embarks on a new relationship with Frankie. Madea helps each family member with their problems while she sets up a family reunion. The movie has break out performances from a talented crowd of young African American actors all while being anchored by performances from icons such as Lynn Whitfield, Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson. This is one movie that crosses racial, ethnic and socio-economic lines. If only we had more Madeas. Oops, strike that. One Madea is enough for anyone.

Madea's Riotous Resolutions for Family Revolutions

Review For: Madea's Family Reunion (DVD, 2006, Full Screen)

Tyler Perry is a handsome man of color who is so gifted as an actor, writer, and director of this film. The family reunion is not the mainline story of the movie: a young woman being physically and emotionally abused by a rich fiance' bully is.

Madea (Tyler Perry) is probably as conventional a sassy an "post menopausal" American black woman as can be characterized on the silver screen. Perry cross-dressed as Madea is so convincing that I don't even remember Madea is a man underneath the clothes and character.

She's flat out hysterically funny. Her husband is also a riot and too true to life, Perry is scripting them as quite typical for their age, class, culture, and situations.

If you've not seen a Madea movie, this is the one to view. You're really missing a work of art that sends amazingly real cultural and moral messages. In particular, Maya Angelou's and Cicely Tyson's performances are truly historical. Angelou's physical gestures are too rich in sarcasm and perfectly played. Her poetic self is true to her usual meticulous form. Cicely Tyson delivers the message of the movie with the finesse of one of the great actors. Her character is quite similar to Toni Morrison's "Baby Shug," in her Pulitzer prize winner, "Beloved."

The third and latest of Tyler Perry's Madea films is by far the best. I'm convinced that Madea could even straighten out the Middle East!~

Madea's Family Reunion Is Good, but not Tyler's best

I love Tyler Perry's Madea character. Madea is a tough cookie with a heart of gold, who doesn't let anyone take advantage of her. She tells it like it is. All of Perry's movies with Madea have a hard line story (in this case, a double-theme of an abusive man and a mother who has let her daughters be abused to further her own interests), as well as another story of Christian redemption (good, hardworking, Christian, young black man meets a woman with trust issues and wins her over). This is probably the weakest in the series. Diary of a Mad Black Woman is good, and Madea goes to jail is excellent. Still, the Madea story-line was very heart warming in this movie. The judge makes Madea take in a foster child in order to avoid going to jail. In true Madea fashion, she takes the girl under her wing and builds the girl's self-confidence. All in all, a good movie. Who can resist Madea?

MY FAMILY LOVED THIS SHOW TYLER PLAYED ALL OF HIS CARETORS GREAT THE CREW THEY CHOSED WAS GREAT AS WELL,WE GOT THIS SHOW BECAUSE IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM MOST, IT COVERED A LOT OF SUBJECTS AS WELL,FROM A ROUGH TUFF MADEA WHO DON'T TAKE NO SASS FROM ENY ONE TO A QUITE LITTLE KIDS, I DID NOT KNOW IF I WOULD LIKE A MAN PLAYING A WOMAN BUT I DID LIKE MADEA, TYLER PLAYED HIS ROLE WELL!!!IF MADEA WOULD HAVE BEEN A PRESSY TYPE OF WOMAN, I WOULD NOT HAVE LIKED IT,BUT BECAUSE SHE WAS A ROUGH AND TOUGH KIND OF WOMAN WE LIKED IT,WE WERE A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT THE SHOW AT FIRST BECAUSE A MAN PLAYED THE PART OF MADEA, TYLER PLAYED THE PART GREAT, AS WELL AS THE OTHER PARTS HE PLAYED THE WHOLE CAST DONE A GREAT JOB!!! IF I WAS RATING THIS SHOW AND CARITORS THEY WOULD GET 150 PER CENT ON A SCALE 0 TO 100 WITH A PLUS 50!!!I LOVED MEDIE WITH HER ROUGH ATTUDE AND THE WAY THE JUDGE SOLVED HER PROBLEM WITH MEDIA BY GIVING HER A PROBLEM TEEN TO TAKE CARE OF,MEDIA WOULD NOT TAKE NO GUFF FROM THE TEEN AND SHOWED THE GIRL WHO WAS BOSS FROM THE START AND IN THE END THE GIRL ENDED UP TURNING OUT TO BE A GOOD GIRL AND WAS HAPPY WHEN SHE FOUND OUT THAT SHE COULD STAY FOR AS LONG AS SHE WANTED, THIS SHOW ALSO HAD DIRTY OLD MEN IN IT ALSO BUT WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS THEY DIDN'T GET CARRIED AWAY WITH IT BUT IT WAS THERE TO WARN YOU THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT LIKE THAT, YOU SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR THEM. Madea's Family Reunion

Review For: Madea's Family Reunion (DVD, 2006, Full Screen)

A stellar cast with Madea at the helm doing her thing with the flare and style only Tyler Perry can create. Cicely Tyson is incredible as one of the family matriarchs along side Maya Angelo. Blair Underwood was very impressive as the abusive fiancee in need of a crash course in how not to treat a woman as only Madea can teach. Tons of laughter but also many lessons we all need to learn about family and what is most important; love.
