Movie synopsis
Matthew Weiner, a writer and executive producer for THE SOPRANOS, may have set this series in the picture-perfect 1960s, but his characters are just as scheming as the mobsters on his last show. MAD MEN begins in 1960 on Manhattan's Madison Avenue at the fictional ad agency of Sterling Cooper. Creative director Don Draper (Jon Hamm) rules the halls of his company and the hearts of every woman he meets, while his wife, Betty (January Jones), struggles to be the perfect mate and mother in a suburb upstate. But just as in the world of advertising, Don may not be all that he appears. In MAD MEN, the glass ceiling is dangerously low, and sexism reigns in a way that may shock modern viewers. But this isn't the prim '60s of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW; Weiner's characters seduce, smoke, and swig with abandon--often within the walls of Sterling Cooper. MAD MEN takes equal parts substance and style to create an addictive cocktail that fully earned its freshman season wins at the Golden Globes for Best Dramatic Series and Best Actor in a Drama.

Being someone who is interested in peroid pieces from the 1960s in particular, Mad Men's premise appealed to me about those men who worked on Madison Avenue at the time as an avenue to creative types to have rich, prolific careers in putting their creativity to use. At the heart of the series is one of these men, Don Draper, who on the surface seems to have it all (great job, respect of his peers over/under, a beautiful wife, two adorable children, many women on the side) yet somehow cannot help that all is not well with him from within. The angst of Don--as well as those around him--make this an exceptional series NOT to be missed!!!! Though set in 1960, the knawing which permeates Don's living can be seen in the prism of anyone who adjacent issues. Also, 1960 was still very much a (white) man's world--but not quite for long as this series will also touch upon as the episodes unfold. Change is in the air which we the viewers can see in retrospect that the characters, set in the moment, just cannot. With 16 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Jon Hamm, who plays Draper at the heart of this fine ensemble piece series) and Best Supporting Actor (John Slattery, better known as Gabrielle Solis' late mayoral husband, Victor, on Desperate Housewives. Slattery plays one of the partners at Draper's advertising firm.), not only is Mad Men a critically-acclaimed series unto itself, but also leading a probable shift towards the tastes of modern television viewers finding out just how wonderful basic television original series can really be. The show airs on AMC with its second season starting July 27, 2008!

I bought this first season set on Blu-ray to get the most out of the Mad Men viewing experience. I must say that, besides the great service I received from my seller, the set is a serious bargain!!!!! The picture and sound are solidly fine (the former stronger than the latter) and the commentaries are rather informative. I have liked this series all along since Day One, 2007. Yet now, in viewing this fine First Season set once more in the privacy of my own home via Blu-ray, my appreciation of this well-crafted series has grown even more--so much so that I just cannot say enough abot it as evidenced by the length of this review. Check Mad Men out for yourself and see if you will be Mad about it as I and may others evidentially are!!!!! :)

Great Series, one of the best shows on televsion today.

Mad Men is one of the best shows on television discussing life in 1960's America. The show does a excellent job of showing the how Jon Hamm's character (Don Draper),the White-male with the great job and the great salary is still unhappy with his life. Also the show describes how Elizabeth Moss's character (Peggy) struggles with being a woman in 1960's America. Peggy in the first season of the show is constantly being hit on and sexual harassed by the male executives in the office.

The show does an excellent job in showing society's attitudes about sex at the time. When Peggy goes into the doctor's office to get contraceptives, the doctor says that he will not continue her prescription if she sleeps with a lot of men. But Jon Hamm's character at the same time has multiple affairs with several woman and he is considered a stud.

Season 1 of Mad Men does a great job of discussing the life of professional white men coming into the city from the suburbs, the struggles that woman had to go through at the time and the beginnings of the hippie movement and Civil Rights Movements. I hope that Season 2 continues on in doing a good job in describing this time in American history.

Mad Men-Season 1

I loved Mad Men on TV and wanted to see it in more detail so I purchased it. I would give it 5 stars as being one of the most realistic and captivating series I have seen in years.

It is an interesting portrayal of the life and career of 1960's advertising men and their families in New York. The main character is suave, debonair, ladies man, Dan Draper, a veteran of WWII, decorated with the Purple Heart. Dan is smart, funny and has everything going for him, a great job, beautiful wife and children. Dan commutes by train to NYC every day to his job on Madison Ave., called in the trade as a Mad Men. Dan's life and past are full of secrets which are slowly divulged throughout the episodes. Dan is living a life of quiet frustration.

This is a glimpse of life in the 1960's where women wore dresses, hats and gloves to work and men wore suits, lies and wing tipped shoes. Life looked proper and respectable, but was it?

The last time I was into a series was for The Sopranos. After that show ended I never thought anything could top the caliber of that show, but Mad Men proved me so wrong. This show is perfect on every level and has by far shown that it has the potential to be one of the greatest shows on television ever with only its first season. Here's hoping that this series will continue to grow and get better. If you are into T.V (Basic cable television for that matter) you should feel ashamed if you do not invest, let alone rent this season.

Spectacular writing, acting, production

I don't normally write reviews, but Mad Men has me so enthralled that I just had to urge anyone who is trying to decide whether or not to buy this set to take the plunge and buy it!

The Mad Men narrative here in season 1 and the current season is superlative. The characters are so well written and played, no wonder it won the Emmy a couple of weeks ago for best drama. The whole production is incredibly rich and nuanced.

Check out blogs, such as Basket of Kisses at http://www.lippsisters.com for wonderful discussions about the story and characters.

I can't recommend this highly enough! Can't wait for season 2 on DVD
