Movie synopsis
A sweet Japanese schoolgirl is out on a rampage in this ultraviolent action flick from director Noboru Iguchi. When gangsters murder her brother, and hack off her left arm, Ami gets her stump fitted with a gattling gun and goes out for revenge. Needless to say, Ami's pleated skirt and knee-high socks get awful bloody as the bad guys find themselves on the receiving end of her wrath. Drill bras, chainsaws, and flying guillotines cut and grind their way through this kinetic killfest that will thrill fans of extreme horror and Robert Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR.

Over-the-top violence! Fun 4 wild cult film fanatics!

Review For: The Machine Girl (DVD, 2008)

There was such a frenzy & intense anticipation about this release that the US version had sold out before it even hit the stores! Being a fanatic over wild Japanese cult cinema, I HAD TO GET IT! Not to say that I was disappointed, but I guess I expected it to live up to the hype which was a VERY high standard indeed! I'd definitely recommend this more for fans of "The Story of Ricky (Riki-Oh)" than Takashi Miike cultists - extreme cartoony ultra-violence without much of an original story in between the insane battles & gore. BUT if this is what you are looking for in a movie, this be your cup o' blood! Just like "Ricky", sometimes you cannot believe what you have just seen and have to stop the DVD & re-watch the wild fights! Everybody who I try to explain the plot to says, "oh - she's got a machine gun arm - like her leg in Grindhouse "Planet Terror"!" I don't know who came up with the idea first or even care, since Grindhouse fans will enjoy this movie too, though they are totally different. So it boils down to a recommendation for the gory wildness only & to a lot of Asian Cult cinema fans, that's definitely more than enough.

Sexy heroine exacts revenge.

Review For: The Machine Girl (DVD, 2008)

The Machine Girl is an entertaining Japanese Action/Gore film. A tale of revenge after her parents commit suicide after being accused of murder and her brother gets killed by a gang of hoodlums. Ami wields a machine gun arm attachment and teams up with the mother of her brother's friend that has a chainsaw. Together they seek to avenge the deaths of the two boys in an over-the-top kill fest.

If you like action movies and like B Horror movies, you're sure to enjoy this movie.

Live Action Anime

Review For: The Machine Girl (DVD, 2008)

For those of you out there who are familiar with different anime (especially the classic stuff - St. Seiya, Devilman, Fist of the North Star) you know exactly what I mean. The action was pretty good. On the level of Planet Terror. But the story was a little . . . I dunno . . . meh?

Without giving too much away, it takes the historic narrative approach. That is it starts at some point in the present with the main hero, at some point, asking "how did it come to this?" or "how did this all begin?" The movie itself is supposed to be a historic narrative to answer that question for the audience. At the end, we come full circle back to the present and the hero then resolves the conflict of the story. Unfortunately, The Machine Girl kinda stops short. Either that or it doesn't clearly specify for the audience when the narrative has completed or "come full circle".

But back to my original point. Here's a medical fun fact: The human body only ever contains 6 pints of blood in it at any one time - 3 pints freshly oxygenated in the arteries and 3 pints "dirty" (with CO2 and other systemic chemicals) in the veins. The circulatory system is on constant run recycling bad with good. If 3 pints (50%) of blood is lost the body suffers from hypovolemia which can definitely be fatal. However, in anime, and apparently this movie, that doesn't seem to be the case. I often found myself wondering "how is it that Ami (the heroine) hasn't died yet?" Oh well.

If you're looking for anime style action, you've got it! Want blood? We've got buckets! But the story is gonna require a bit of willing suspension of disbelief.

Terrible....don't waste your time

Review For: The Machine Girl (DVD, 2008)

This movie is awful. Plain and simple. It is trying so very hard to be a "cult" film, it gets lost in a sea of badness. Terrible acting, awful script, bad "fight" scenes, and the gore is pg-13-esque at the most. I wish I could get my time and money back.

My movie grade = F-
