Needed to replace an old Garmin GPS and owned a Lowrance HDS-5x. We liked the write ups on the HDS-7 Insight and the experience with the HDS-5x but found it a bit disappointing that not every lake in the northwoods of WI were covered by the Insight. We certainly believe we either missed a disclaimer or the marketing of the product is misleading.
Secondly, the HDS-7 has a bug in it's shipped software that effects the reading of the Navionics SD card. We purchased a region in Canada and the SD card only worked 20% of the time until we returned back to the states and applied the latest firm/software patch.
Either way the product will serve it's purpose.
The unit I purchased was used. I made the mistake of not testing it completely when I received it. Yesterday I put my boat in the water and the GPS and Structure Scan portions worked but the depth finder did not. Therefore it is useless. I have checked with Lowrance and it will cost $599 to have the unit repaired or replaced. Therefore I certainly cannot say that I am pleased with this specific unit. I have attempted to purchase another Depth finder/GPS through Ebay. It malfunctioned as well, but Ebay helped me get a resolution to that problem. While I have no complaints about Ebay's performance I am not inclined to attempt to purchase any other electronic products--certainly no used ones.
One of the best combo fishfinder/GPS units on the market very easy to use,It has the ability to connect with the new structure scan system and a c ard slot for maps. all around excellent unit.
Other than having one side of the split screen feature be the dominant feature and having to go to the menu to acces the other side to make changes I am very happy with the way my HDS-7 operates.
The unit has an excellent display. I have it mounted in the dash of my boat. It is easy to read in direct sunlight. Unit is much better over the LCX series displays.
