| "UNLESS someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not." Long before saving the earth became a global concern, Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax, warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth's natural beauty. "The big, colorful pictures and the fun images, word plays and rhymes make this an amusing exposition of the ecology crisis."School Library Journal.Illus. in full color. | |

I purchased a collection of Dr. Seuss books for my 4 year old granddaughter because my son (her father, age 36 now) loved them so much at her age. She loves rhyming words, so I knew these would appeal to her. I especially looked for "Horton Hears a Who" and found it included in the one large collection of Dr. Seuss books included in the set. I was disappointed, however, to find while reading that story to my granddaughter, that half of the text on one of the pages had been torn out. I'm assuming the seller was not aware of this. I was forced to improvise on that page, but then I do that a lot anyway in order to make the books age appropriate and hold her interest. I find that even though these books are almost 40 years old, they are still wonderful for children and have stood the test of time. I highly reccommend the Dr. Seuss collection to any parent or granparent. You'll have just as much fun reading them as the child will hearing or reading them!!
This book is about an environment loving creature called the Lorax. When the greedy Once-ler drives through the forest and finds the Truffula trees with their soft, fluffy tufts he cuts them down for a profit. He makes a Thneed, which you can use for almost anything, and sells them to make a profit. Then he cuts down the trees like a maniac and pollutes the water and the air. The birds, fish and Barbaloots (a bear-like creature) move to try a find a better place to live in. The Once-ler calls all his family members to help him run his Thneed factory. The Lorax tries to get the Once-ler to stop polluting the forest and replant the trees he has cut down. But the Once-ler doesn't and then the Truffula trees are gone along with all the animals. Then, when the Once-ler denies the Lorax's one last request to save the forest, the Lorax flies off and only leaves a circle of rocks with the word "UNLESS" inscribed in the circle.

This is a WONDERFUL book! This is a classic that I recommend for all children and adults. The message of the Lorax is one we should all heed - take care of the environment or there won't be anything left. Dr. Seuss puts this story to a great rhyming text. There are some delightfully made-up words that will make you laugh. This is my favorite book to read to my kids (ages 3 & 5) and they always enjoy hearing it too.
This was one of my favorite books and show as a child and a must have for my kids personal library.
Environmental issue such as overharvesting trees, displacing wildlife, and polution are addressed but in a way that will keep a young viewer entertained. Near the end of the book one single seed offers hope of a brighter future.
In our family the clever rhyming holds the attention of our young kids, so like many of the Dr. Seuss books, this is a great one to read aloud.
Seuss's classic environmental cautionary tale is every bit as good today as it was in '71 and its message is more important now than ever. A great story that any kid will love and one whose message parents will both appreciate and enjoy passing on to their children.
