The little mermaid is a coming of age story without the understanding that generally comes along with growing up. Ariel is a 15 year old mermaid who falls in love with a human male whom she's never met, spoken to or interacted with. She sees a handsome man and basically, 'falls in love' with him. Her father, being a merman, disapproves of her interest in the human man and the surface of the ocean. Ariel, being emotional and irrational, decided to make a pact with the sea witch: three days in human form without her voice in an attempt to win the Prince's heart and hand in marriage. So Ariel is essentially an attractive mute female, who is going to attempt to make a stranger love her based on her looks and muteness. She abandons her family and gives up her primary way of communicating for a bout of teenage infatuation little girls are introduced to as love. The original fairy tale by H.C.A. ends with the prince choosing a girl who speaks over Ariel who he treats as a fond pet. The little mermaid is an unrealistic and superficial look at love, family ties and what it means to be a 'girl in love'. This movie is a way to ensure our little girls have detrimental notions of what girls, and love is like.
This is one of the best movies that I seen that doesn't come for Japan. This Disney folm is great, even to day stabdard where CGI seems to rule. The tale of a mermaid turned human as the constant classic struggle of good verus evil. A Disney films that is all about entertaining your family. It's just good for all ages. The Little Mermaid isn't just a kids film, but adults can get in to it as well. Ariel fights to be with the person that she loves but there two very different words are pulling them in the wrong direction. It's not to childish and I love the music. " Under the Sea!". Serious at time and and funny. This movie will just keep you watching to the end. This is a movie that kids and adults will watch again and again for years to come. It's a classic magical film that is full of under sea adventure and rich colors. You and your family will love again and again.
Disney's 1989 animated film THE LITTLE MERMAID is a very formidable movie, surpassing the combined visual and musical artistic talents of all concerned. Character development is one of the strong points of THE LITTLE MERMAID achieved through concise dialogue, music and simplistic yet effective images. However, most effective to the success of this film are the songs that advance the story line and define the characters. That was the brilliance of lyricist Howard Ashman's contribution to THE LITTLE MERMAID. He and composer Alan Menken developed songs that in several minutes clearly define Ariel's reckless but innocent curiosity about the humans above and her yearning to discover that world. Every song in THE LITTLE MERMAID bolsters the depth of the characters, advances the plot or enhances the significance of a scene in addition to being very melodic and well written. So in THE LITTLE MERMAID we are given a substantial amount of information and entertainment in a minimum amount of time. There is not a single frame of wasted footage in this film. The combined effort is one of a splendid and effortless looking perfect creation of a classical animated Disney tale.
