The cream of the crop.

For advanced users: The WRT54G-TM is in my opinion the best platform for running DDWRT. With DDWRT it can be configured as a repeater, an AP, a router/gateway, VPN, there are really too many features to list here.
If you plan on having large amounts of traffic on your network the 32MB of ram is a great feature vs. the 8 or 16MB of most other WRT series routers. Also with a large 8MB flash memory you have plenty of space for flashing any compatible firmware you can find. The 200mhz chip can be overclocked, though I have not done so, nor have I felt the need to do so as it is always responsive. I would recommend this for small business networks or advanced home networks. I now own 3 TMs and maintain a network with on average between 10 and 25 wireless clients (I sell internet access in my apartment complex).

For the average user: You will notice much less slow down when multiple users are connected to the internet. This is thanks to the extra ram. Just like in your computer, more ram will equal to better multitasking. The reason this has so much more RAM is simple, it was designed for T-Mobile Hotspot service. Though it is not required you have T-Mobile to use the router for networking.
Though the wireless is 802.11G which tops out at 54 MB/s this will make little difference if you are only surfing the web or playing games. Your actual internet connection is likely much slower than 54MB/s, an average range for internet connections is around 6-11MB/s. The setup process is fairly simple, but some computer knowledge will help. With the included software you should have no problems.

Overall I recommend this product to anyone in need of a router. Whether you need the T-Mobile Hotspot service or not it's a strong choice.

The best wireless router you can buy for your house.

These routers, the WRT54G-TM's, are the best routers available for your home.

You might say "Why would i want that T-Mobile crap on my wireless router, i don't even use T-Mobile." The answer is simple: build quality. While you may not be able to tell the difference between these routers, and your everyday WRT54G, there is a HUGE difference on the inside.

The WRT54G-TM is built with 32 MB of RAM inside to buffer your traffic going out to the Internet. The WRT54G v8 router has a lowly 8 MB of RAM.

So what's the difference? Speed. Stability. A user of a TM could easily open 25 random browser windows simultaneously, while a v8 user would likely crash their router with 10. (Owning both, i can assure you this is the case.)

Technology enthusiasts love the TM. It is one of the best routers for the DD-WRT project. DD-wRT allows users to truly get the most from their routers. As we speak, my TM's are maintaining secure tunnels to remote networks via OpenVPN. This tunnel allows me to remotely manage my family's PC's, transfer files, even install printers on other networks.... All from a 50 dollar router!

The choise is clear. Power, Stability, Performance, and Flexibility, the TM has it all. Perfect for any home user.

Linksys WRT54G-TM Wireless Router

The LinkSys WRT54G-TM is a wireless router that allows loading 3rd party firmware. I wanted to try the Tomato Firmware and DD-WRT Firmware
Pros: I succeed to load both, the Tomato and DD-WRT Firmware as expected and I liked very much.
I like special: The Bandwidth Monitor, DDNS custom URL (supports direct your server) and Wireless Power Control .
Con: Nothing till now.

The reason I still run wireless G!!!

This router is still the reason I do not feel the need to upgrade to any newer standards. It has one hell of a flash chip (8MB) and a bunch of ram (32MB) for a G router. It runs my 4 bedroom home perfectly. I have 4 wireless clients plus 3 hard wired and we can't slow this baby down. From gaming to web surfing, p2p and a NETtalk voip device, everything is perfect. My ISP plan is 20Mb/4Mb and it can do more if I had more speed. Now, the bad: I don't think I would be able to run like I do if I was still using the stock Linksys firmware. I have installed DD-WRT on both of my TM's

Your best choice for running DD-WRT or OpenWRT

I have been very happy using the WRT54G-TM routers for OpenWRT or DDWRT. They have 8MB of onboard flash, 32MB of RAM, and run *WRT quite nicely. You can bridge the four LAN ports and use the WAN port for your inbound connection and use it as a nice all-purpose firewall and VPN concentrator. I highly recommend any WRT54G-TM priced under $50.00.
