Lenovo ThinkPad T60 - Expert Review - TA TECH
Created: 10/12/10
The Lenovo ThinkPad T60 series was the first ThinkPad to be released with Intel Core Duo technology. The T-Series carries a long lasting tradition of durability, security, usability, reliability, and performance which is why so many people in the business field prefer the T-Series. Lenovo ThinkPad T60 is the perfect notebook and is the obvious choice of most business professionals. It is a thin and light notebook and proves to be the most ideal for traveling business-persons and professionals.
Lenovo T60 is among the first T-series from Lenovo instead of IBM. IBM initiated the ThinkPad name and Lenovo would continue to use the IBM logo for five more years after completion of the deal. It offers the ultimate combination of all necessary features like weight, keyboard, durability, security, broadband connectivity, and performance. Further, the cost is affordable and adds to the features.
The ThinkPad T60 is of the premium on Lenovo's product-line. The durability of the T60 maybe the first thing you notice just by holding it in your hands. For someone who travels a lot and relies on their notebook to work, the T60 is a laptop that will be there for you when you need it most. The durability is apparent in the components used — a sturdy case and strong protective chassis.
Features
Like stated previously, the Lenovo T60 has a very durable build. Even the LCD screen has a sturdy design held up by steel hinges. An example of how much Lenovo thought into the design of keeping this a laptop that will survive, the keyboard has drain holes for accidental spills. The hard drive is also made to take a beating with shock-mounts and an internal roll cage that holds other miscellaneous components in place, out of harms way.
The T60 has a rugged, plastic body that does not flex. The lid is magnesium reinforced which won't flex and provides incredible amount of protection for the screen. The way the drainage system works for the keyboard is that liquid is carried away from sensitive components and out through the bottom of the notebook. The entire notebook chassis is a newly designed magnesium which offers 30% more protection than the preceding T-Series models. The T60 has an APS (Active Protection System) that stops the hard drive if the laptop is dropped hard to prevent data loss.
The ThinkPad T60 has an Intel 1.83GHz Core Duo processor. The video graphics are produced by an ATI X1400 Radeon card with 128MB of video memory. RAM is configurable up to 4GB but usually comes with 512MB-1GB standard; however, Windows XP can only read up to 2GB of RAM. Those of you who would like to use all 4GB can upgrade to Windows Vista since this laptop is powerful enough to run Vista and certified to do so! Vista has actually become out-of-date and proceeded by Windows 7 — which is actually a lighter OS than Windows Vista so the T60 should not have a problem running either of the two.

This laptop is for those who appreciate quality

I write for a living and wanted a laptop with some substance. I went to Best Buy where a pimply-faced teenage boy tried to get me interested in everything from a 17 inch Toshiba to the new Mac notebook. While each had their perks such as battery life and mobility, I wasn't thrilled with any of what I saw.
What stuck in my mind was the little IBM Thinkpad my roommate had got his thirteen year old son to tinker around on. It was simple, solid and what I liked compared to other laptops was its matte screen.
I did my research and finally got myself a Thinkpad T60- refurbished with a 15.4 inch screen. This thing is built like a tank. It is all black, which may not be stylish enough for some, but I prefer something that is classic and not something in a garish color that will look outdated within a very short period of time.
Amazingly, I saw a video on YouTube about the Thinkpad's waterproof keyboard. Not that I plan to test it out but apparently if you spill water on the keyboard, it will drain out a hole in the bottom. This makes a coffee drinker like me less nervous about having my cup of joe in the morning while I browse my emails. I even saw a video of a guy whose IBM Thinkpad went through a fire and, after they pried it open, still got it to boot up. Then I read a review of a guy whose brand new Toshiba laptop died when it fell two feet off his bed onto a pillow.
Though I don't really need a lot of bells and whistles, the T60 I bought came with a lot of nice extras. Who knows- I may actually use the Netflix on it or the internet TV someday or even burn DVD's etc. For the most part, I bought it for work and I want something reliable because this is my bread and butter. I do quality work and I'm of the mind that you get exactly what you pay for- so it's ultimately important to invest in QUALITY from the get-go. Rarely will you have a complaint and years later when it's time to move on to something else, you'll likely feel you got a very excellent return on your investment. The IBM Thinkpad is definitely one of those items.

Where do I began. After using an older IBM Thinkpad 600e, this thing is a hoss. Fast processor , and Fast RAM, does everything I need , and then some. Feels solid, reliable, no heating issues, runs for hours on end if needed. I'm using two , yes two ,operating systems on this computer, both Windows XP Professional, and Linux Mint 11. It runs both without any problems, complications or issues. Screen resolution is amazing, boot up time is fast, and I've easily found software specifically for this machine easily through the IBM Website. Added the movie player, and RecordNow. Both of which I use, and often.
Internet connectivity with the built in wireless card is so nice, efficient, and handy not having a wireless card sticking out in the way. Connectivity is better, built in Wireless-G card works very well in both Windows and Linux mode.
As far as battery life, the battery that arrived with the laptop wasn't so great, no one can really warranty a used battery anyway, a new 9-cell high capacity battery is on it's way, and I'm expecting easily 4-5 hours of mobile time with this unit, this information from just simple Googling .
These IBM Thinkpad's are extraordinarily durable machines, structurally sound, with plenty of protection around the motherboard, processor, and all internal components, built to do business, but very stable machines for the average home user. Faster processor and 2GB RAM provide fast operating processing, internet usage , and user friendly to boot. My machine even has the built in fingerprint reader, I'm not using it yet, but I plan to set it up soon.
As with all computers, protect them, keep your anti-virus software up to date, check your firewall settings and stay away from any sites that don't look secure, or anything your AV software warns you about. You take care of your machine, and it'll take care of you !.
I can't say enough good things about IBM Products, I owned my older Thinkpad ( a '99 model ) running WinXP with no problems ,complications or issues, I never called or e-mailed tech support, because I never needed it.
I purchased this machine because I needed more processing power, and more hard drive space, and it was simply time to upgrade, based on my personal usage of the machine.
As far as likes, I like everything about this machine, dislikes ?, I wished I'd bought it sooner /
Compared to other machines , most of my experience with Dell laptop's and HP Pavilions, My experience with IBM Computers has been the most productive and trouble free usage I've had to date. Grab an IBM Thinkpad T60 , and enjoy your mobile computing experience ASAP.

Pretty Good for basic activity

I think its a pretty good laptop I got it at a bargain here on ebay it came with pre-installed windows xp, and so far it works great, its around 8 pounds I guess that's not too bad, I like that it has intel core duo this is my first laptop and the first computer I got with intel technology I also liked that I can rip my music from CD that's a nice thing and I was able to connect to the net fairly easily.
Things I dislike about this laptop is it has a lot of unnecessary pre-installed software that takes up a lot of hard drive space, also the battery only last about an hour sometimes less, and the cord is generic it gets really hot when its plugged in and it had some out dated software that needed updating. lastly I kinda hoped the laptop would be compatible with windows 7 but its not. but that's ok because my desktop has 7 on it, so I can use my desktop if I want to use 7 I guess that's not a big deal. over all I'm pretty happy with it and I think its a great first laptop for the basics and maybe some light school work.
