starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the roles that brought them stardom with The Mask of Zorro. Now married for ten years and parents to young rascal Joaquim (charming Adrian Alonso, perhaps being set up for a future Son of Zorro), dashing swordsman Alejandro (Banderas, a Spaniard playing a Mexican) and sultry spitfire Elena De La Vega (Zeta-Jones, a Welshwoman playing a Spaniard) abruptly divorce, sending Alejandro on a drunken binge--which only gets worse when he learns Elena is being wooed by the mysterious Armand (Rufus Sewell, a Brit playing a Frenchman). Little does Alejandro know that Elena has ulterior motives, and that a worldwide conspiracy and a secret weapon will soon threaten the integrity of the U.S. The Legend of Zorro has way too much plot, leaving room for only two genuinely preposterous donnybrooks and a handful of lackluster brawls. Banderas and Zeta-Jones flash a bit of their considerable charisma, but by and large they (and the movie as a whole) are on autopilot. Not awful, but lacking any real spark. --Bret Fetzer

After seven years, Zorro (Banderas) is back. After stopping an attempt to disrupt California's vote to join the United States, he returns to his wife Elena (Zeta-Jones) and son Joaquin (Alonso). Elana wants him to stop being Zorro now, but he thinks there is still a need. A huge argument leads to a divorce. Three months later, Zorro is a drunk and Elena is being courted by a French count by the name of Armand (Sewell). Zorro begins to think that Armand is up to no good, and begins looking into things, only to find something surprising. Now, Zorro must go into action to save the day.
"The Legend of Zorro" may have taken too long to hit the big screen. It has been a long time since "The Mask of Zorro" entertained audiences. While there is still some of the magic left, it is nowhere near the magic of the original. Banderas and Zeta-Jones are back, but their chemistry is a little off. The story is ok, but not good enough to sustain 128 minutes. That is not to say that there is nothing to be enjoyed here. There are a number of moments throughout the film that work, but as a whole, "Zorro" is lacking something.
As much as it would be difficult to shoot a sequel to Snow White and Peter Pan and promised the same freshness and excitement. I would say this sequel has given its best and would provide perfect fun for a family gathering, which I suspect was what the studio had decided to do in the first place.
Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones return in The Legend of Zorro. Banderas once again puts on the mask as Zorro. While the relationship between Zorro and his wife is on the rocks, Zorro still has to put on the mask and do what is right for the people. There is a new threat unlike any he has had to face before with a weapon like no other. Great action scenes, you have to love Zorros horse Tornado during this movie also! Perfect ending also! There are some good Special features, like deleted scenes. I had wish there was more though, but that is really my only complaint about the movie. Must see!
We love the parts that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Antonio Banderas have played through the years, and particularly have enjoyed them in the Zorro movies! He is very handsome and she is very beautiful and they certainly make a nice couple! We have enjoyed that the movies are somewhat historical, yet comical as well, and still have a serious side too! And they are very family friendly with no cursing, and no blood is seen even with the fights or battles they have. It is a little hard to view what is supposed to be the head of Zorro's brother, but it can be fast forwarded or turned away from, etc.! Thumb's up!!
Naturally, like most people, I got this because I LOVED Mask of Zorro with Banderas & Hopkins. To me, the natural sequel would have been showing the son grow up to take over the Mask from dear old dad. Well, this isn't that story ! It is still good, it just isn't what I think most of us expected. The plot is a bit buried, and I think they were all trying to hard to make a great sequel & were working with a wounded script - not exactly LAME, but definately wounded. It's better to watch the second time than it is that ever-so-disappointing first time - it definately grows on you.
