|The third game in the legendary Zelda series (after The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link for the NES), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is widely regarded as one of the greatest games of all time for any console. The storyline, which involves rescuing Princess Zelda and seven other maidens (each locked in a away in a different dungeon), is engrossing, the Light and Dark Worlds (which you can teleport between using a Magic Mirror) are filled with secrets, traps and puzzles, the battle system is tight, and the interfacing and mapping system is convenient and easy to use. Link begins the game empty handed but will soon find a sword and shield and will eventually discover numerous other items, including many new to the series, such as the Pegasus Boots, the aforementioned mirror, and a grappling hook. Longtime Nintendo composer Koji Kondo (Super Mario World) provides the musical score (meaning that it's excellent, of course), and the graphics and sounds show excellent attention to detail. All in all, this is a must-own title and a wonderful return to (and upgrading of) the many things that made the original The Legend of Zelda such a brilliant success. After the somewhat disappointing (but still solid) Zelda II, this is a good (make that great) thing. |

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of the finest video games ever made. It would easily rise to the top of a best of list. As the title implies, it is very similar to the original Legend of Zelda for the NES. If you liked that game, you'll love this one. There is an overworld you must explore, dungeons you must find and beat, supplies to upgrade and many many secrets. The graphics are obviously updated, and in addition to a lot of similar aspects tied to the original, these are also expanded upon. For example, now you can talk to people to obtain information or to get items, or have taskes assigned to you. You have and are able to look at an overworld map for the first time. Where you need to go next will often be labled for you. There are two worlds in this game which mirror each other, light and dark. You'll have to go in between the two to progress in the game or to reach certain items. Also, there are some new cool items in this game like the ice and flame rod, in addition to some powerful new magic attacks. Some of these elements were present in the Game Boy Zelda game, but never before on the big screen. Other added items from the original NES version are the bug catching net, running boots, shovel and the debut of the hook shot! There is also an item in the game whcih creates blocks for you to use in certain ways. Also, this is the first time you were able to swim in water. Just like the original the world is huge. There is a lot to do and a lot of things to keep you busy aside from simply progressing through the game to finsih. What makes this game so good aside from being a Legend of Zelda game which today is a household franchise synonymous with greatness for it's originality and clever gameplay puzzler style is it's replay value. I think many people will find things they missed the first time around, or forget things they achieved the first time around, regardless of if it's your first, second, third or more times of a run through. The sound and music is great as well. It's about what you'd expect from a Legend of Zelda game, grand and epic. Perhaps not the greatest graphics of a game show cased on the SNES though very impressive for its time, and a huge step up from the NES/Gameboy versions. This game is available for download through Nintendo's virtual console as well, so if you're having trouble finding it, or don't want to pay a lot here on eBay, you can go that route. (I happen to be a purest, so I like to have the actual cartridge, though I do own it on the VC as well, I suppose for conveinience). At any rate, this really is one of those must have games for the SNES. I highly recommend it. You absolutely won't be dissapointed, I gaurantee it!
One of the best Adventure/RPG games made for the Super Nintendo, and possibly one of the best of all time, in my opinion. There is extensive gameplay for the time period that this game comes from, and a very diverse world to explore on your quest for ultimate victory over the evil that plagues the world. Armed with Link's signature weapons (sword, shield, bombs, boomerang, and some others that you acquire over time), you must fight your way through both the lands of Light and Dark. You can free-roam around the land, interact with other people, and collect items to help you in your quest. Your ultimate goal is to find your way to Ganon and defeat him before he takes over Hyrule, but to make it to him you will have to fight several of his powerful minions before getting there. This game is a great precursor to The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, and really introduces you to many of the basic themes that you will find in the following Nintendo 64 game. A must have for any Zelda fan!
There are those of us who grew up playing video games, from the frustration of Atari coupled with the frustration of grade school to the advanced graphics and gameplay of a PS2 coupled with advanced college degrees. Very few games provide the experience the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. (LOZ:LTTP).
Based off the ridiculously popular Zelda games for Nintendo, the Super Nintendo version explores the land of Hyrule in a similar, yet completely unique way. Friends and enemies remain the same, as Link must fight to save both Princess Zelda and his homeland of Hyrule from Ganon and his minions. However, the gameplay, graphics, and sound in this game reach heights that few other SNES games could. The advances made between NES and SNES are amazing when comparing the two Zelda games.
The gameplay is similar to that of the original LOZ, where Link must explore the overworld for rupees, heart containers, friends, and various items. To find the valuable items, and collect pieces of the tri-force, Link must venture into the underworld, dungeons full of traps, trickery, and trials. Assorted monsters guard the tri-force pieces, so Link must be prepared to fight. He uses a sword and shield, along with items such as arrows, bombs, elemental attacks and many more. There are many, many secrets in the game, which provide an excellent re-play value.
Link's journey begins in the normal land of Hyrule, but he must also travel between Light and Dark worlds to complete his quest. Ganon was able to create a gateway between the light and dark world using Princess Zelda and others, one which will slowly destroy the light world and replace it with the terrible dark world. Link must conquer both worlds in order to restore peace to the land.
If there is a SNES without this game anywhere, there is a problem. If you do not own this game and either like Zelda, Nintendo, or monsters, YOU MUST OWN THIS GAME. Top 5 SNES game.
After you've gotten the Power gloves go to the desert area in the game. Once there find the man thats sitting next to his sign. Go a little bit south and to the left where you should find two large rocks. Lift up the rock below the top one and a secret area will be opened. Once inside you'll notice a thief and 10 different pots that each hold a blue rupee, break open each pot and take all the money. You'll be able to do this as much as you please because the blue rupees come back every time you leave and reenter the area. It should only take a few minutes to get the maximum amount of rupees.
Once you've gotten the super bomb and already blew up the wall blocking the dark worlds fairy go inside and make sure you have at least one empty bottle with you. Go up to the Mysterious pond and it will ask you to throw something in. Scroll through your items until you come across an empty bottle, then throw it in the water. The Fairy will come out and ask you if you droped it. Answer yes and the fairy will say she likes such an honest person and will fill your bottle with green potion. You can do this as many times as you want.
Get the red shield before entering the dark world or paying 500 rupees
After you get the Zora flippers, find the big waterfall in the light world. It should be near the area where you got the flippers. Once you see the waterfall walk right into it and you'll be able to go inside of it. Once your inside you'll see a pond and it will ask you to throw something in. Choose to throw your small shield in and a fairy will ask if it is yours. Answer "YES" and she'll give you a red shield.
How To Buy A Golden Bee
Go to the cave with the Ice Rod, and go into the non-secret entrance, not the one leading to the Ice Rod. Dash into the statue at the end of the passage, and a Golden Bee will pop out. Catch it, and take it to the guy who refuses to sell you the Golden Bees. He will say that they are not as rare as he thought they were and will begin selling Golden Bees.
Obtain ten medals in the Four Swords multiplayer mode, and you can start a riddle quest with the Lumberjack in Link to the Past. Complete the Riddle Quest to obtain the Hurricane Blade special move.
Save the Fish!
When you are in the light world, go to the dungeon where you get the Ice Rod. To the left, you will see a little fish flopping around. If you catch it with the right button, you can go up one screen and throw it into the water. It will thank you with 20 ruppees.
Different Statues in Links house
After you get all the statues from completing the riddles go into your house and select the magic powder. Sprinkle it on the statues and they will sparkle. Sprinkle magic powder on them again to get them in color. Sprinkle them one final time to get Bunny Link, skinless chicken, and Zelda as an old lady.
In the light world, go to where you recieved the flute. Go down one screen. To the right where there are two trees. Stand next to the top tree and use the Ether medalion. Walk away from the tree and ram into it with Pegasus Boots and a head like Blind in her human-ish form will fall down and explode as if it were a bomb.
WOAH WOAH WOAH. This game transported me to the past. I mean that in a literal sense. I'd always wondered why this game was titled "A Link to the Past" since it does't actually feature time travel, but now it's obvious. When I turned on my Super Nintendo I was sent 20 years into the past, and boy was I surprised to find out that my house had not even been built yet.
I quickly decided against looking for anyone I might know due to the danger of accidentally erasing myself from existence, but in hindsight I realize that I was actually already born in 1991 so that was probably not as big of a problem as I made it out to be. The bigger problem was almost certainly how I would return to the future, as my Super Nintendo had not even made the trip back to 1991 with me.
I've always been a procrastinator so I went to the movie theater instead of dealing with the problem of returning to 2011. The theater was showing Terminator 2, which I figured would be a great way to pass a few hours. To my dismay I found out I only had my debit card on me, which obviously wouldn't work because my bank account wouldn't even be opened for another 18 years. In the end it worked out okay because I found out it was pretty entertaining to ruin the ending of the movie for people waiting in line for tickets.
After the novelty of spoiling the ending to Terminator 2 wore off I decided to busk on a street corner, singing hits from Color Me Badd and TLC that had not been released at that time. Within a few hours I had made about 40 dollars, which in today's dollars is about 63 dollars. I was a little confused about how inflation works and decided not to spend that money until I returned to the future, thinking it would be worth more in 2011.
Finally I decided to deal with the problem of returning to my natural time. This was a considerable issue, due to the fact that I had no real comprehension of how I got to 1991 in the first place, and no older mentor character I could consult for help. I once read a book about the power of positive thought, it had never helped me in 2011, but I attributed that to the fact that it was a bit out of date at the time.
I concentrated deeply about returning to my own era, focusing all my energy or chi, I think. Either way it didn't work. In anger I began spinning in circles, violently swinging my fists as I did so. Before I had come to my senses I had killed or maimed several people, and predictably the police arrived and were forced to shoot me, due to the fact that tasers had not yet been invented, and it was much easier than any alternative.
I awoke back on my couch, covered in sweat and mountain dew. Immediately I began to wonder if my travel through time had been a simple dream. This theory only held up until I realized that my romp through 1991 had changed the 2011 I knew in unexpected ways. I was surprised to find out Lady Gaga was a chart topper in this future, and my zeppelin had been changed into a Volkswagen Jetta.
All in all this game was very entertaining, albeit in strange and somewhat incomprehensible ways. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of extremely dangerous time travel and retro video games.
