In 1943 when the ranks of professional male baseball players were leaving for the war, a group of ladies left their homes to become part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and kept baseball alive for a grateful nation. This is their story. Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) is the team's most gifted player, and the camaraderie and jealousy with her sister (Lori Petty) is part of this film's charm and complexity. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is the drunken ex-player and slob manager who eventually brings the team to success. Directed by Penny Marshall (BIG, AWAKENINGS) and also starring Madonna, Jon Lovitz and Bill Pullman.
This is a Must-Have for fans of Geena Davis and Tom Hanks, who carry this movie...Geena as "Dottie Hinson", Starting Catcher and Slugger of the Rockford Peaches, playing in the All-American Girls Baseball League during World War II, with "Kit Kelly", her younger sister played by Lori Petty, striving to overcome her big sister's shadow. Jon Lovitz is surprisingly strong as Ernie Capadino, the Scout who signs up the sisters to play for the Peaches, and Bill Pullman has a cameo as Bill, Dottie's husband returning crippled from the war.
The Peaches, with Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna playing tough teammates from New Jersey, are managed by "Jimmy Dugan", played convincingly by Tom Hanks, former Big League Baseball Star turned alcoholic, but is transformed by coaching the Peaches.
As the story develops, the Peaches go through some growing pains as a team, but come together to become one of the hottest teams in the league.
As sisters on the same team, Kit constantly challenges Dottie about outshining her, never being able to overcome her big sister's shadow...always an easy strikout victim because she "likes to swing at the high ones." Finally, frustrated with her sister, Dottie tells GM Ira Lowenstein, played by David Strathern, to Trade her. Instead of trading his star player, Kit gets traded to the Racine Belles for a striking blonde pitcher played by Janet Jones(now Mrs. Wayne Gretzky).
The film comes to a showdown between the best two teams in the League, Racine and Rockford in the Championship Game, Sister Kit pitching against Dottie and a chance to rise above the Giant shadow cast by her sister.. climaxing with a play at the plate!
A Wonderful story about a Women's Professional Baseball League that was a popular diversion from the War and the transformation of these women from a sideshow into a competitive team. "This Used To Be Our Playground" is the theme song sung by Madonna, with an excellent segue from the modern "Women in Baseball" exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame, flashing back to the 1940's and the magical first season of the league, then segueing back to the Dedication of the Exhibit and a reunion of the former players.
FIVE STARS for this "Chick Flick" that even a guy can enjoy!
This is a great movie with a superb cast. Well acted , World War II time period about professional Women's baseball. Covers the gamut as far as character study about the star players and coach, and shows the dedication of women in sports during a time period where the women belonged in the home. It shows another aspect of where women "picked up the ball and ran with it", (no pun intended) during a time when every available man was involved in the service of their country at war. Many movies, books and documentaries enlighten us to the fact that effectively women took the place of men in the industrial world, taking on out of character jobs such as welders, machinists, shipfitters and the like during the second World War and were instrumental in the Allied forces victory, but this fine film shows a lighter side with the "girls" keeping an American pastime thriving during a difficult time period.
This review may sound like I am promoting Women's Lib., but in reality, I had the pleasure of being involved as a driver for a University women's division 1 softball team for 7 years, and this film portrays the dedication and capabilities I witnessed without the ego problems common in other sports .
If your lookig for a lighthearted yet moving story about sports, I recommend this film highly. Definately 4 Stars in my Book.
Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty.
great cast. great story. great directing. did i mention the amazing cast??? Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Lori Petty, Rosie O'Donnell... and Penny Marshall directing?! I saw this movie for the first time in the theatre when i was only 12 and it is still one of my favorites. But girls playing baseball?? Love it! "There's no crying in baseball"... well not until that tear-jerking ending which melts you.
A League Of Their Own..Madonna, Geena Davis, Tom Hanks just to name a few..This movie based on a true story of the "All American Girls Professional Baseball League" everyone does a terrific job portraying their true life counterparts..this film is a mixture of comedy, drama and sincere loyalty..I laughed and I cried..the whole Family will enjoy this one, but be aware the small kiddies may need to be in bed for this one..everyone will enjoy this film..and I believe learn from this film as well..I know I learned alot!!
