Movie synopsis
This complex thriller follows the fatalistic relationship between two men: Maurice, a crook just out of prison and Silien (Belmondo), who may or may not be a Doulos (a kind of high-class informer). Maurice, wasting no time, immediately begins to put himself on the wrong side of the law, setting up a number of robberies with the help of Silien, whom he begins to suspect is a police informer. A spellbinding New Wave noir from director Jean-Pierre Melville (LE SAMOURAI).

Editorial reviews

"[T]he set pieces are staged with a style and self-consciousness all Melville's own."
Sight and Sound - Geoffrey Macnab (07/01/2004)

"Even back in 1962, Melville made the usual suspects feel new by wrapping them in gorgeous desolation." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (07/27/2007)

"The 1963 gangster thriller, mixes American elements into a Parisian setting, creating a stylish, gripping milieu."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (09/07/2007)

"Melville's storytelling never suffers from philosophical meandering. The precision with which he films robberies and escapes marks him as one of the most lucid and gifted directors of physical action..."
New York Times - Charles Taylor (09/15/2008)
