I REALLY wanted to like this game.
I watched the development of this title from the first screen shot released right through it's release. Read the various interviews with the developers, and took in the assorted videos released.
Then, I read the reviews on it...nearly all scathing, for it's poorly implemented controls, and thought to myself...they can't really be that bad.
I bought the game (just recently) with the knowledge that they were releasing a patch to allow the use of the analog sticks.
I should point out that while I deal with motion control, I'm not a huge fan of it. That being said, it wasn't the motion controls in this game that annoyed me. Even after I applied the patch, and tried the analog controls, I found that the camera work for this game is simply terrible.
Graphically, as others have pointed out, it's a very nice looking game. The sound is also very good in the game. I'll continue to play through it to check out the story, as I feel it too is decent so far.
But thus far, the controls simply aren't great, even with the choice to use the analog sticks. One could probably work around the poor controls if the camera would help you out...but it doesn't. It's the very poor camera control in conjunction with the less than stellar controls that ultimately doom this game to mediocrity, when it held such promise.
In the end, I'd say your best bet is to give this one a rent. If you can get accustomed to the frustrating controls, and get past the horrific camera, and even a bit of bad targeting during combat, there is still an interesting game to be found here.
It's simply a question of if you have the endurance or persistence to stay with it through its flaws.
Sadly, for Lair, when there are so many other quality games now out, or coming very soon...I can see this game getting set aside, and not picked up again.
The game looks and sounds amazing but that is really all it is. Gameplay and controls really hold this game back from being a great game. You can read all the indepth reveiws you want but when it comes down to it Lair is a great game as a rental. This game is not worth $60 dollars. Had this game came out as a download and at a $30 dollar price point I wouldnt feel so bad playing it. But I am glad I rented this game before buying. I am surprise since this game was made by the same guys that did all those great Star Wars games. I think what they should have worked on was less on the graphics and more attention to story gameplay and control.
Pros: The graphics are amazing on a high-definition display. The story is very good and has some interesting themes and lessons to learn about human nature. The controls work great. The missions offer a lot of variety.
Cons: The graphics are greatly hindered by a standard defenition display. The controls take a long time to get used to. However, I can't believe people are saying that the controls are bad. If you play the game for five minutes and quit because you are not good, then don't rate the product.
Other Thoughts: How does this game not live up to the hype? This is exactly how my friends and I pictured Lair would be. I bet the same is true for all of you. You're just letting poor critic reviews and 360 fanboys get to your head. You shouldn't believe a game is bad because others say it's bad. If everybody rated this game honestly, I think it would get much higher scores.
The game that sunk Factor 5. The game came out to horrible reviews, but looked good in the prviews I had watched. So a E-Bay purchase later i could try it out. The game has been patched to use the analog sticks (originaly it was just the tilt controler. I have tried both and prefer the tilt controler, it is tricky to get the hang of, but works far better then the reviews led me to believe after getting used to it. The game is pretty much like the previews, there is alot of flight fighting, shooting fireballs and a poor combat dragon to dragon (in air) fight system. The dragon to dragon fights are a waste of time and are an anoying interuption. Overall the game lives up to the hype I built for it and is a solid game. Some of the graphics are a bit crude up close, but they where ment to be seen from the sky so this is forgivable. The fighting on land is a bit harder then i expected and an early mission can be frustrating till you get the hang of it. I would recomend the game if it looked good to you in the previews.
