LG Ally (Verizon): Great phone for the cost, but leaves you wanting more.

No, I would not recommend this product.

Today I am going to review the LG Ally for Verizon. I have been using this phone for almost a year. I am still on the original new one that I got and have not had to file a claim for a refurbished or new on yet.

The Price: I paid $99 for my upgrade, however the price has come down lately to about $49 from my knowledge.

The Good: The phone itself is built pretty well. Keys are places where they should be for easy functioning. The keyboard definitely is one of the better ones on the market, the keys are spaced far enough apart to where you aren't stumbling for letters like the droid. The screen is nice and bright and it comes with a lot of programs and of course the Android market. Battery life is average however you are not going to want to put advanced task killer on it if you have Android 2.2. I have dropped the phone serveral times with the rubber case on it and so far it has been solid and still working. However this is really where all the great features stop...

The Bad: The internal memory runs out all the time, once you start to put programs on it, be prepared for reboots because it will run out of memory. The SD Card is small only 4GB vs. the Droids 16GB, however that never really caused an issue for me. The camera can be very slow at times, but pictures are average. The processor on this phone is pretty slow at times, there is definitely a difference from the Droid. Reception is average at best and the screen isn't the most sensative.

Conclusion: Overall this phone is decent for the price, however it is pretty much a over priced texting phone with the slide out keyboard. If all you plan on doing is light internet use, text messaging, and calling this phone will do the trick. Once you get into using programs that are demanding on processing power this phone will not be able to keep up. Save the money and put it into a better phone, you will out grow this phone quickly.

Goodbye Windows Mobile, Hello Android!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This phone was a replacement for my Samsung Omnia Windows Mobile Phone. I was looking for a device that was more stable and had a keyboard.

While it maybe a little slower then other Andriod phones, navigation between menus and screens are very easy. Ease of adding on widgets and short cuts are very nice. Since I had an account with Google and a Windows phone designed to sync information with the account, all I had to do is type in my username and password into my Android phone and all my contacts and calendar events were up and running in seconds. I also was able to find Widgets that matched the Today screen on my old Windows phone. The widgets are a lot easier to navigate without bumping the wrong thing on the screen. ThinkFree Office comes standard with the LG Ally, which was another selling point. It is a very stable Word & Excel viewer and editor.

A couple things are minor dislikes. Built in memory is only about 100mb. However that can be resolved with a MicroSD card. Some of the navigation keys are a little too close on the slider keyboard, so it is easy to exit from what you were doing. Also, it seems certain phone setting are not available, for example, lock settings, or different sound profiles. I'm sure there is an app out there to fix that issue. The processor is only 600mhz, so if your looking for multimedia performance, then you might be disappointed. For me, it works GREAT for a work phone. There are a lot of organizing apps out there to match most the features I expect from a PDA/Smart Phone.

I will never go back to a Windows phone again. LG makes a well rounded Android phone, and I hope they continue!

Another excellent LG product!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a great little Android phone that has all the essentials in it. To keep the battery last all day long, I turn off the GPS, WiFi (turn them on only when needed) and installed advance task killer. Also, I've moved programs to the SD card that allows me to.

The Navigator is excellent - when you get out of the prescribed route, it does not need to recalculate, it automatically re-route its directions.

The MP player sounds excellent too. One thing - maintain your files/data regularly to avoid running out of internal space as it is a bit limited. The glass is quite durable - I did not replace the original screen protector when it came out; it is still scratch free, I do have a leather case for it where it always stays when not in use. The sliding keyboard - the best one!!!! So easy to use, the keys are spaced properly and the phone also has the Android keyboard and it has the voice to text capability!!!! Nice to have when you have to send and prefer not to type it. The camera is a bit slow but it allows you to attach photos to your messages/emails or even upload it to FaceBook (including videos!)You Tube too!

Overall, this is a great little Android phone - It is not a heavy duty use phone but for a light user, it is a very capable phone. Thanks to LG for making superior cell/smart phones - this is my 3rd LG phone. My next one will be the LG Revolution,

Not worth it for the monehy

No, I would not recommend this product.

My wife and I both got this phone. After about 6 mos, they started loosing signal sensitivity. Yes, we upgraded and do the tower search etc, but we can no longer surf the web or use the phone in our basement. The Verizon store salesperson said 90% of their problems are LG phones. I will never get another LG. Other friends with verizon phones have no problem in our basement (as we used to). I also hate the bloatware that you cannot get rid of and saps the memory. I mean aps like: city id (that you have to pay for if you want to use), backup assistant, amazon mp3, latitude, myspace, skype and talk keep turning themselves on constantly. I don't use any of them. I have a task killer ap but I has to be used in crazy mode to work. I'm considering rooting it but why should I have to? I pop the battery daily now. I can't wait until i can get a iphone at the end of my contract.

Great phone if you don't mind rolling up your sleeves and flashing Velocity

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

My wife wanted a slide-out keyboard. I would have liked a slightly smaller form-factor...but she keeps it in her purse, not pocket...so it isn't a big deal. Barely larger than her ENV3 it replaced.

It DID run a little slow until I flashed Velocity 1.1 on it. Google it, it isn't that bad.
-Rooted with super one click
-Installed Clockwork Rom Manager
-Flashed recovery
-Put Velocity 1.1 on micro sd card (zip file)
-Rebooted into recovery, cleared all user data + delvik cache
-Flashed Velocity 1.1

...this thing runs like a dream and the wifi seems to drain my battery way slower than my OG Droid. I did use the Velocity Toolkit to overclock a little (825mHz, from 600ish stock).

Only con, can't seem to get Flash working on it. Still trying...has to do with the processor type (limitations), it seems. No huge deal, though.
