A newly designed signal-processing engine makes this compact camera twice as fast as the DiMAGE G500. You can turn the camera on, focus, set the exposure, capture an image, and turn the camera off in 1.5 seconds. It takes less than a second from turning the camera on to being ready to capture a sharp, well-exposed image. The DiMAGE G400 has the technology to capture the moment. The camera can focus and determine the exposure in approximately 0.2 second and the shutter-release time lag is approximately 0.03 second.Dressed in an elegant metal case, the DiMAGE G400 is a stylish companion. The G400 can be easily slipped into a pocket or bag and taken wherever you go for business or pleasure. The DiMAGE G400 follows the tried and true design of traditional film cameras. Its form is simply a product of its function. The lens is designed to minimize flare and off-axis aberrations so that the tonal range and detail in the scene are apparent in the final image. The new signal-processing engine ensures the images captured with the CCD are reproduced as accurately as possible. Advanced amateurs will appreciate the image-making features included in the DiMAGE G400. Color, sharpness, and contrast can be controlled to create the image you want. And the color-balance function allows you to change the relative proportions of the red, green, and blue to shift the overall color of an image.Dark noise, an ever-present problem in electronic systems, manifests itself by giving a grainy or sandy appearance to images taken with long exposures. DiMAGE G400 combats this with a noise-reduction function, which automatically activates for exposures of 1/2 second or longer. The DiMAGE G400 is easy to use. The built-in lens cover not only protects the optical zoom, but also turns the camera on and off in one smooth movement. Buttons and controls are ergonomically placed to facilitate operation. And the familiar click of a film-camera shutter sound gives a positive confirmation an image has been captured. The slim, stylish DiMAGE G400 is a high-performance digital camera. Within its compact body, the DiMAGE G400 has powerful imaging tools and a dual memory-card slot. It makes capturing beautiful 4-megapixel images simple.|

Great little camera, very durable and performs fantastic. Very quick to turn on, very little shutter lag, takes great quality pictures and has manual controls if you like to experiment also does movies (only in standard definition though). I had one since 2006 and took over 10,000 pics until it finally died. I liked the camera so much I found another one here on ebay. I've tried other pocket shooters and they don't compare to this one.
The best camera I have had clear pictures.
Light weight and easy to learn how to use.
My dream is to get another hope to get it soon.
I like the size, ease of use, and image quality. It's not new but it's still a quality piece of equipment. It'll take a little while to learn everything the camera can do.
If you want to just buy a camera for its looks this is a great buy. All stainless steel and built well. Being that I am a Marine and this has seen its tour in Iraq and stood up to my 2 year old playing with it. To say the least it takes a beating and keeps going.
Photo quality, Video quality are great for a 4MP camera. Sound recording with the video is not too bad. When recording video though you are unable to zoom in and out.
Does come with the normal point-and-shoot auto setup. For the more photographically inclined it does offer a wide range of manual adjustments.
No internal memory on this camera, need SD or Memory Stick.
Only downfalls that I have come across with the camera is with action shots it can lag slightly behind unless you have it setup for the Mega Fast setting which will shoot 3-5 pictures in the matter of a second. Only other issue which is not too huge unless you are used to it. There is no docking station with this camera, and you have to remove the battery to charge it. No worries with that though because this battery lasts forever! Just to put in perspective I started flying at 10am taking pictures/videos of aerial refueling. Landed took pictures/videos on the ground and was able later that night to do some night vision shots.
If you are looking for a decent camera and not looking to blow the budget this is a great one to get yourself into.
Right from the beginning, this camera impressed me. The stainless steel case, the rapid startup 0.7 seconds), the perfect pictures every time. It's one of the few of the new generation of "slim cameras" which also has a viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen, very useful for rapid motion shots and bright sunlight.
Having two card slots (SD and memory stick) allows for flexibility and increased storage. I was quite surprised to be able to shoot nearly an hour of continuous video on the memory stick card, and on one rechargeable battery. The video is as good as most camcorders quality and is in AVI format which is easy to burn onto DVDs.
Overall, I found it to be nearly the perfect camera for most of my purposes. It's small size, ruggedness, rapid startup and high quality pictures makes it the perfect camera to carry around with you.
