"Video capture up to 1080p HD resolution; image quality is quite good for a mini camcorder; SD card slot; removable, rechargeable battery; bundled composite and HDMI cables; strong low-light performance; external mic jack; electronic image stabilization; 5-megapixel still capture; macro focus mode."
Bundled software isn't Mac compatible but necessary for smooth playback of 1080p video; price doesn't include an optional memory card.

I had been looking at these mini-camcorders or flash camcorders for a while. They are all similar in many ways. The Flip, Creative Vado, and others. Most come with built in flash memory from 2GB to 8GB. They are easy to operate, and easily plug into your computer to download via USB cable.
I decided on the Kodak Zi8 for a number of reasons. It was the only cam that would take SD memory cards. They range from less than a Gigabyte to 64 GB. This camera will accept up to a 32GB SD card. The more memory the longer video you can take. And if you want HD video plan on using up a lot of memory. You might not think you will take a lot of video but I went away for a 4 day weekend and took my new Zi8 and took a little video here, some there and recorded 1 hour and 42 minutes of video. I easily could have went over 2 hours which is the limit on most mini cameras. I still had plenty of room for a couple more hours of video that is with a 16GB SD card. With a 32GB SD card you will out shoot the battery.
The picture and sound were very good. the Zi8 comes with a mic in so you could plug in a microphone and get excellent sound quality. Also has a HDMI out to hook up directly to your HD TV. Zi8 shoots in 3 different resolutions. Even the lowest looks pretty good. The built in software that automatically downloads to your computer. No discs neccesary.
This is a great flash memory cam with great versatility. And for me the best on the market right now.
I have both the Zi8 and the Zi10 "TouchPlay" Kodak Cameras. This review is for the Zi8. I use the camera for making videos of my band. I like hte fact that the Kodak Zi cameras have the ability to use an external stereo mic/line source for the audio instead of the internal mono built-in microphone. That way, I can take the stereo sound off he band's mixing board and get much, much better quality audio (and in stereo). I like the control functions and picture/video quality of the Zi8 better than the Zi10, but the Zi8 is deficient in that it does not have a stereo headphone out (like the Zi10 does)or any other stereo audio output apart from the HDMI cable -- which is fine if you have a modern TV, but not if you are using an analog video monitor system (like an old TV). In that case, to playback in stereo, you have to use a HDMI to analog converter that costs about $100 new, and send you stereo signal to either your stereo analog TV (most are mono, though), or an input on your home stereo system (while the video still goes to your TV). I had to get the converter because I use it in many places and a lot do not have HDMI connectivity.
So, if HDMI connectivity is not a problem for you, then I recommend the Zi8 over the Zi10. Otherwise, get the Zi10 because you can get a seperate stereo out through the headphone jack (which doubles as the stereo mic/line in jack).
The other thing I don't like about the Zi8 camera is the fact that the input sensitivity for an external mic has to be reset each and every time you turn the camera on (and it will shut off by itself after a certain amount of time).
Overall, though, it's a very cheap way to get YouTube ready videos of your band with the possibility of high quality stereo audio if you use a good external stereo mic or line source.
When I was trying to find a video camera to take with me on a trip to China I knew I wanted something small that could fit in my pocket and be under $200. Of course the first camera I looked at was the flip but I quickly switched to the Kodak Zi8.
Being a film student I wanted a camera in which I could capture the best quality, and not just quality picture but quality sound and the Zi8 fit both of those. With its 720p/60fps I can film some great footage and with the external mic I can back up that footage with great sound.
Since I was going to China one of my other big concerns was memory space. The flip mino has built in memory up 2hours. For 2 and a half weeks in China this just isn't enough. But the zi8 has an SD card slot that allows me to have over 4hrs of video on 1 32GB SDHC Class 6 card filming at 720p/60fps (this makes the largest files). As and added bonus the Zi8 has a much larger screen and exports videos in .mov files so you don't have to worry about conversion.
If you wanted to fault the zi8 on anything you could say that it's stabilization software is useless but you can turn it off. It's battery won't last 4hrs but replacement batteries are cheap. It doesn't do well in low light situations but no camera of this size and quality will. It doesn't have optical zoom or manual focus but you can buy a third party attachment to get these and again, with it's size and price no others have these features. In short, I am VERY happy with my purchase and if you are looking for a pocket camera then this is the best there is.
Purchased it over a week ago and for the task we are using in it it does more than its asked for ;-) the Kodak Zi8 has five shooting modes: 1080p (1920 by 1080), 720p (1280 by 720) at 60 frame per second, 720p at 30 fps, WVGA (848 by 480), and still photos (5.3 megapixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio). Video is captured in H.264 format and audio is recorded at 48kHz.
And something we in ElectronicosPR liked was that Kodak has provided an external jack for connecting a better, more capable microphone than the one integrated into the Zi8 camcorder.
The camcorder has a 2.5-inch screen and overall it is fairly compact, measuring 2.4 inches by 4.5 inches by 0.9 inch and weighing 4.8 ounces.
Now one thing that its very convenient is that the Zi8 has a Flexible USB Connector that saves all the hassle of usb cables and so fort to your computer.
One thing we loved about the Kodak Zi8 is that it has a HDMI connector so you can view your movies HD in a snap on your TV or computer.
Well to Finish I think its far more than we asked for recording ebay mobile phone auctions videos and taking smartphones pictures for our listings in ElectronicosPR.
So if Economy and Performance its what you seek the ZI8 from Kodak should be in your top priority list.
Lets get to the point
Small, light, high definition, no auto focus, has macro focus mode, good battery, image stabilization.
Easily playable on computer and uploadable to youtube.
Honestly its more than worth the cost. Only thing missing for me is auto focus but that would bump the price significantly higher.
