| "Packer was magisterial in substance, but adopted the tone of a fellow traveler. He convinced us that the study of God 'is the most practical project anyone can engage in.'" "Something must be said for the staying power of a book like J. I. Packer's Knowing God. With some of the language and rhetoric updated, the foundational elements of the book are as powerful and strong as ever." "This is a book that urges us to know about God and then to know God in Jesus Christ. It is a book that serves up real meat--a thought-provoking call to apply ourselves to knowing who God is and to develop a close relationship with Him." "[The author] urges us to know about God and then to know God in Jesus Christ. . . . [A] thought-provoking call to apply ourselves to knowing who God is and to develop a close relationship with him." Week by week and day by day, Packer gives advice that is sure to motivate and inspire readers to reach for more in their quest to unite with God. A fine read for any devoted Christian. | |

Can there be anything more important than knowing God?Is it important to be absoulutely certain that you know the God who truly exists?Mr.Packer's purpose in writing the book was to address(what he see's as the root of the Church's weakness)ignorance of God's ways and what it is to commune with God.
The first section of the book is concerned with what it means 'to know God' and to be known of Him.The second part of 'Knowing God'sets forth some of God's attributes such as:Immutability,wisdom,love,grace,wrath... .The last third of the book addresses the benefits and blessedness of having a knowledge of the Lord.
One thing that sets this book apart is the authors desire not to just impart knowledge about the living God but to have that knowledge (under God's blessing)have a transforming effect upon the life of the reader.Mr.Packer writes on p.18(commenting on the Psalmist in Psalm 119)"his supreme desire was to know and enjoy God Himself and he valued knowledge about God simply as a means to this end.He wanted to understand God's truth in order that his heart might respond to it and his life be conformed to it."
Everyone wants to be truly happy(if they are in their right mind). There is nothing in this life that can bring lasting happiness and peace as the knowledge that God is for us and with us.J.I.Packer notes p.29"What is the best thing in life, bringing more joy, delight and contentment, than anything else?Knowledge of God. ...Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,...the mighty man glory in his might,...let not the rich man glory in his riches;but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he knoweth and understandeth Me(Jer.9:23)."
One of the great benefits of 'Knowing God'is sonship to God.The author explains not only what it means to be 'A son of God'(and demonstrates why it is such an important teaching)but also points out that the Church from the reformation until the present has written very little on this doctrine(which is surprising considering its significance).
Packer's 'Knowing God' is considered a classic by many and in contrast to so many modern Christian books is searching and challenges believers both young and old(spiritually that is)to consider the reality and the depth of their walk with God.
This is truly a great book. There were many times while I was reading that I had to stop and bow my head. At times I was in awe of the wonders of God and Jesus Christ, at other times I was called to repentance. While I will always promote the preeminence of reading scripture, Knowing God by Packer is a wonderful book to help put the attributes of God in proper order. This book ranks in my top five of the best and most helpful Christian books I have ever read.
"Knowing God" is a great book extolling the wonder & majesty of God! It is an incomparable modern day classic!
This book made me understand that my relationship with God was not as it should be. I knew about God, but there is more that I needed to do and understand to know God. I recommended this to my Sunday School teacher and he did it as a study. I think any christian new and old should read this. It IS very deep and I had to read parts several times to understand. I have since purchased the Knowing God devotional. This isn't something new as this was written some time back.
Purchased this book for a Bible study and have found it to be excellent. Packer is able to reveal the joy, peace, glory of knowing God in the most intimate of ways.
