These are some of the best sounding casual listening headphones I've put on, with just one caveat.
I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile, but I do value good quality audio and I generally know what to look for. The S4s have I think one of the best frequency balances of the different headphones I've put on. Good amount of bass and punch without any loss of high frequency clarity. So long as your audio file is clean and with a high bit rate, you won't hear any distortion or clipping -- at least not that I have experienced. The high frequencies also cut through nicely and aren't unnecessarily ear piercing like some other headphones tend to sound like at higher volumes. Also at this price, it's hard to go wrong.
Unfortunately, the biggest annoyance I've had with these headphones is the plastic coated wire. Plastic in general is just not a good idea, as it has a tendency to coil and not loosen. The coils will often bunch up and not only look ugly but also rides up along your chest rather than naturally fall. The biggest frustration with the plastic coating is getting the wire properly wrap around your ears. I wear these headphones like how most professional musicians wear their in-ear monitors -- over and around the ear. Because of the natural tendency for plastic to straighten back out to whatever shape it's originally in, the wire will constantly pop out over your ear.
There is however a remedy. If you run the wire behind your back, you can pull the straightener up to your hairline and it will tug the wire tight against your head, thus preventing the wire from popping out over your ear. But whether you wear these headphones in front or behind you, I don't think it justifies the issue of bad production. Everything else about these headphones are great, but the choice of plastic coated wires was terrible.
Overall, I would recommend these to anyone who wants great quality audio at a low price. If you can get over the wire coiling up, it's a great buy.
I had the good fortune to meet Paul Klipsch in 1979 and he explained his speaker designs to me. He stayed with the basics of audio design, never looking to be an over the top designer, but his company and the current engineers have done him proud.
Particularly as we age, the highs in our hearing go away. Loud concerts, hardcore headphone usage all contribute.
The frequency response of these earbuds are incredible, as I expected. I can hear instruments I failed to hear before. Just as the Klipsch speaker products emphasize the higher frequencies (for those of you with better hearing curves you can adjust) they make a tremendous difference.
This is why I have Klipsch La Scalas and Klipsch Cornerhorns from back in the day.
You cannot miss with the product and the sellers offer this at a great price.
The product comes with multiple earpieces so fit is not an issue as it usually is with my odd ear canals vs. other products. The provided case is nice too.
Effective, great frequency response, no mistakes here.
I bought this product because my cousin accidentally took my JLab 5's that I had recently bought a month ago. I'm always at Starbucks studying so being able to tune out my environment when people's conversation get too interesting is important. With that said, I'm glad my cousin took my JLab 5's because I would have never have bought these babies had she not =)
I like that these headphones come in a portable tin case along with various sizes of ear buds. I personally use the double-flange because it helps the pieces inside my ear, but more importantly it helps with isolation and really improves the sound! I did as recommended and burned these in whenever they were not in use (I googled 'jlab burn-in' audio). These sound amazing. I'm no audiophile so I can't go into much detail about the highs/lows/bass, but they are all definitely there.
versus JLab 5 - these stay in your ear better. With the JL5s, I always had to pop them back in my ear. This is especially annoying when you are running 3+ miles. I experienced the same problem while lifting weights at the gym. Although I have not run with the S4s, I have not experienced any problem with them falling out of my ear at the gym.
versus Dr. Dre Earbuds - my brother owns a pair and I have used them. I think that these are on-par, if not better than the Dre earbuds. I copped these at 50$, his were more expensive. The only plus I see on those are style points.
versus Sennheiser 680 - S4s dominate the Sennheiser 680s as far as sound goes. When it comes to staying put in your ears, I can't imagine that these would beat the 680s. In fact, I don't think any pair of headphones/earphones could.
These are a nice comfortable pair of ear bud speakers. The one issue I have with them is that for music, they are very bright. If you like treble, then you will hear how bright these are. Being a part time private investigator, these go very well with hidden wireless microphones. I take online classes over the Internet, and these are great to plug into my speaker volume control and I hear every word the teacher is saying, very clearly. when attached to a stereo unit with bass boost, the ear buds do not respond as well as others. The sound in these is crisp and clear. I like that for certain music, and listening to online lectures, but certain music, I would go for an ear bud with more mid and bass response. The coating on the wires is stiff and springy. The coating could be different and the wires would hang a lot more naturally. These can tangle easily.
I bought the S4's because of the reviews and great price. The sound is good, they are welll built and have good noise canceling. That being said, I am not a huge fan of the in ear design. They come with 3 different size tips so this helps but doesn't fix my issues with this style of headphones. I use these for mowing the lawn but thats about it. I get out the old iPod standard buds for everything else due to the comfort. The wire is also quite stout and makes a lot of noise when you move around so if you workout with them this can be annoying.
