| Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South -- and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, served as the basis of an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father -- a crusading local lawyer -- risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime. Harper Lee's classic novel of a lawyer in the Deep South defending a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has earned many distinctions since its original publication in 1960. It won the Pulitzer Prize, has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, and been made into an enormously popular movie. Most recently, librarians across the country gave the book the highest of honors by voting it the best novel of the twentieth century. | |

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic. I tend to read a lot of modern fiction and don’t pick up a classic too often. But I discovered that there is a reason this book is considered a classic. It is an absolute masterpiece. I loved the writing style of Harper Lee – it was simple and easy to read and yet so very powerful in its message. The struggle life in the south with the prevalent prejudices of the time of the blacks and whites living together in a small town is shown through the eyes of a young girl named Scout. Life is straight forward and simple to her and there are clear lines between what is right and wrong. The life lessons provided by her father, Atticus, still ring true today, decades later. There are so many lines from this book that will stay with me. It was powerful and meaningful. I strongly recommend it to anyone. Especially those who think it will be an old book and, therefore, difficult to read. It’s well worth a reader’s time to check it out.
I hadn't read this in many years, but had seen the movie over and over on a regular basis (obviously one of my favorites). While surfing one day, I read a student study guide on the novel, and remembered how much more involved and rich the book is. The movie is wonderful, the novel is much better, and more fullfilling because it shows a longer period in the life of Maycomb and its inhabitants. If you don't love this book, pass it to someone with a better imagination, because that is what is required to picture the activities that occur. Harper Lee doesn't tell you what color and make the old cars are (as some novelists do to prove they are experts). but that they are old cars and therefore you know quite a bit about the people that are in them. She doesnt tell you every detail of the gardens, only the part that come into play, such as collard greens, but you imagine the snap peas and carrots. Love the book.
Such a great story to read and re-read. The story's substance sadly makes me realize that we're not that far removed from the sting of prejudice. I bought the hardcover to add to my collection of classics to read again. It's clear that this is a classic, and was even made more familiar to the general public by Gregory Peck who appeared in the screen version of this story.
I originally purchased this book because I was going to alter it and give it as a birthday gift to my best friend. This is her ALL TIME favorite book. I had only seen the movie before and never read the book, that is, until it arrived! It was such a beautiful book, too pretty to alter, and my husband wanted to read it BEFORE I started cutting it up, glueing things in and writing in it. He RAVED so much about it that I had to read it too.
This is a book that each and every person NEEDS to read yearly to learn or refresh our memories about MERCY and TOLERANCE! Atticus Finch, a character in the book can certainly teach us how to act in situations that we think are unjust and unfair.
The characters in this book are so defined and the book is so well written that you truly will feel their feelings and you can picture them. The book is timeless, but yet it will take you back to a time in history that is a part of our past.
This is a MUST read. By the way, I could NOT alter this book, I had to come up with another one for that project.
First time I have read it and have never seen the movie, which I am told I must do. Ms. Lee wrote one book and in the words of a friend "One is all it takes". The issues it tackles are more alive today than when the book was first written. Great, easy read.
