This thing rocks for the price point. It brings a lot to the table in regards to features and modern conveniences. I had an older vehicle that I needed to modernize quickly and cheaply and this unit brought my 2001 Accord up to par with cars that are 2010 or newer. This unit brings Bluetooth, hands free answering via built-in mic for your Bluetooth enabled cell phone. USB connectivity for your iPod/iPhone/USB stick with 24bit DAC converter...iTunes id tagging for music played on HD radio which you can download later from iTunes.
It's also HD ready and XM/Sirius SAT ready. Plus you can play CDs, save 3 sets of FM presets to memory. It has a beautiful fluorescent display that doesn't distract you with goofy blue lights like lesser brands and the controls are layed out logically through the use of the main rotary knob and display menu list. Simpler is better!
It has a built in preset EQ based on vehicle type (similar to Alpine's IMPRINT system but not exactly since Alpine's system actually does the tuning work for you) or customizable with preset or adjustable x-over settings. Separate built-in subwoofer gain settings if you don't want to manually adjust it from a 2 ch amp. Finally this Kenwood brings 3 sets of pre-amp RCA jacks, 2 for front and rear speakers (4 channel amp) and 1 for the subwoofer (2 ch amp) Again you get a lot of high end features for a very low price point. Plus you'll save a ton of money by buying this Kenwood with these features since this system will grow with you if you later decide to add better speakers, more amps, satellite radio, HD radio, etc. Or you can just live with it's current features just for the enjoyment of listening to your favorite tunes or the great need to have a built-in hands free device in your vehicle. I know I can't live without that feature in my state since it's the law now where you have to use a cell phone with a head set (which I hate!) or some other hands free Bluetooth enabled device like a car stereo. Basically you get a lot for less money. Hope this helps!!
Needed a head unit with all 3 line outputs, which it has and works like it should. This one doesn't have HD radio, but has everything else and more, including stuff I haven't figured out how to use yet (bluetooth streaming)
I can't say much about the head unit's speaker level outputs, I never even tried them, but it's the same MOSFET amp they've been using for years, which works well enough in small cars.
Otherwise, this is the nicest looking Head unit I have seen. I don't really care for the fancy displays and chrome buttons that make a headunit look like it belongs in a Walmart display, this one is very simple looking overall.
As always, installing any kenwood is a breeze.
Worked out of the box, no problems yet, don't expect any from Kenwood anyway. This unit was refurbished by Kenwood, so it is NOT "New" (but you coulda fooled me by the looks of it..).
Details you might want to read.....
sucks. because I can never find anything but talk radio and commercials. The audio quality of analog FM stations pretty much sucks compared to Ipod/mp3/CD/bluetooth. reception is no different than any other kenwood I've had for the last 25+ years (which is very good).
Awesome. full integration and cable hides in the center console. (does not stick out of the front of the unit!)
it has one. reads MP3 disks, just like any other Kenwood late model car stereo. does anybody use them anymore?
comes wtih Microphone. a little annoying when your phone rings in the middle of a good tune, but works like it should.
sound quality is better on the Ipod, but that's to be expected. Memeory stick seems to be the same as an MP3 CD, very good, not terrific, but maybe that's the mp3 files.
Front control panel:
easy to use, but use the remote on the road.. or you'll hit something with your car because you bumped the menu button and now it's playing a 70's disco tune at 96db...yikes!
I like it. It's a Kenwood. This unit replaced a factory Infinity System Head unit in a Mitsubishi Montero Sport.
This radio unit was to replace a cassette deck in an older Jeep vehicle that I purchased over the winter. I have had Kenwood units in the past, but this one really has many of the techie features that I tend to go for. For instance; I run music from my phone, and I really like that I don't have to get tangled in a web of wires anymore. The external phone mic works so well that nobody can tell that I am driving. There are so many options on this unit that there is some sort of a learning curve. Read the PDF manual! Other reviews mention the initial setting where Bluetooth only connects to the front speakers, but that is easily remedied by pressing the button with the phone icon on the console > menu > high freq. audio > all speakers > done. The sound is great, and for what I paid; I couldn't ask for more.
I bought this unit because my 20 year old nephew had one in his car and I liked it. I LOVE the bluetooth matchup with my IPhone4 . auto sync every time I get in the car, no hands fumbling with the phone... I don't know about voice dialing since I havent tried that yet. but an incoming call? Fantastic.
I had an older Pioneerand there is no comparison. This Kenwood is nicer, newer, more featured, crisper.
It's got multiple presets, fold down face plate to access cd player, can be used with HD radio (don't have), you can listen to pandora via bluetooth.. I like!
Good unit with good features and great sound.
Bluetooth setup was easy and quick, worked fine with my HTC Desire phone for taking calls, syncing the phone book and even streaming netflix with nice 4 channel sound! After using it for a week or so, the menu's and remote are becoming familiar to the point that I don't have to look at the HU to use it.
Just wish it had a little more juice in the amp as it is requiring me to buy an external amp. Would have been fine with factory speakers, but I also upgraded my front/rear speakers to polk audio DB571 and db691 respectively. After installing the HU/speakers, adjusting the EQ for the sound I want (decent blend of lows and highs for mostly metal, occasional jazz), I found that when running the volume at 26 or more (range of 1-35), the amp would drop the output volume on it's own considerably after about 5 minutes of listening.
24-25 is pretty loud until your on the freeway doing 70mph with all your windows down. Then, while audible, it isn't loud enough to listen to music and cruze.
So, have purchased an older Kenwood KAC-8452 amp to run them that will be showing up in a week or so, then spending another $200+ to get it installed...
Guess I should have bought lower end speakers. The screaming deals I got on ebay ended up costing me twice as much as I wanted to spend. But I guess, in the end, I'll have a much better sounding system, that still cost me half retail... :)
I would buy this again, especially at what I paid for it.
