I really enjoy the way the blues, classical, acoustic rock and electrified rock come together on this disc. The Jar of flies EP was amazingly recorded in one day. If there was any one single Alice In Chains disk I was forced to listen to for the rest of my life this would be on the top of my list of preferred selections. Its so rock and over the top in places but then it doesn't ever seem to totally commit to one style or another for too long either.
I had originally purchased this recording when it was first released (on cassete! it was a while back). I recently purchased the c.d from Ebay, and was just as happy buying it the second time around. I have lived, eaten, and breathed music my whole life, and in my oppinion, this is one of the top 10 recordings of all time! Of course, I'm a little biased, for the fact that Alice in Chains is one of my all time favorite bands. This is my favorite recording of theirs, and I love everything they ever did. It's a little on the mellow side for A.I.C. It's very soulful, very melodic. To pick a favorite song would be very difficult. "Don't Follow" comes to mind first. Soothing guitar, cool lyrics, probually my favorite. Cool bass line on "Swing on This". "No Excuses" awesome... I like every song on the c.d. I recomend it highly...
This CD presents Alice meshing their thrashing rock style with the feels of classic rock, blues--and lyrically, the ballad. This EP has spectacular breadth, finding Alice playing some of their best rock as well as bluesy cuts that haunt, like the poignant "Don't Follow." The only weakness of the entire album is that it is an EP, and somewhat short...but "Alice in Chains" featuring Tripod the dog on the album cover is only a little while away.
..even 'tho it's older, early '90's music, it STILL carries the weight of angst, anger, hope and love...from the very first track, I was as hooked as if I were addicted...Jerry Cantrell can make one HAVE to hear every song. His guitar style grabbed me- I HAD to run n' pick up my guitar n' follow along. Funny how I'd never bought this album (or cd, if one is 'New School'...I'm more of an album lover) until I got all "E-Bay"ed up...could it be it's the fact that the prices are lower on E-Bay...?...or that one can shop anytime?...or not have to drive from hell to breakfast all over town to get all the music you want? Could be... daBear :)
Twas a sad day when I found out about the death of Lane Staley. He brought a different kind of approach to the whole grunge scene. Versatile in his delivery, Lane crushed anyone in his way of vocal supremecy in his "genre". This album really shows off his flexibility as a vocalist and shows just how good he and the band could change things up. This is by far my favorite AIC c.d., it's just too bad that there are only a handfull of tracks on it. :( Pick this one up if you want to be amazed!
