I purchased this DVD for 2 reasons 1. I adored George C. Scott in his interpretation of A Christmas Carol, in my opinion the best recorded so far and 2. I wanted to see how he handled other English dramas. I was both pleased and disappointed. He handled the characterization well, I believe it is a mistake for Mr. Rochester to be a young, handsome devil like Timothy Dalton or even Orson Welles, but the direction and/or editing seemed choppy, perhaps because it was made for TV. If you are not already familiar with the story, it would be hard to follow in this version. The other problem, as I see it, is labeling Susannah York as "plain!" Really? An awful lot of females would just love to be that "plain."
My recommendation is: buy it if you are either a George C. Scott or Susannah York fan and buy the Orson Welles version if you are a Jane Austin fan.
Far and away the WORST film rendition of Jane Eyre I've ever had the misfortune to watch (and I'm pretty sure I've seen them all)! George C Scott looks and acts about 60 instead of 35. He struts about, stiff, pompous and arrogant and is entirely unsympathetic as Rochester. No wonder his wife went mad!
Susanna York is a joke as Jane! She looks and acts more like a 40 year old matron instead of an 18 year old school girl! Ridiculous casting!
The over-acting makes many scenes almost hilarious. The script barely follows the story from the book and leaves out a lot. This film is really about 2 famous-for-their-time actors trying to make a buck off a universally loved story and doing a hideous job of it! It is static and staged and very much has the "look" of it's film era rather than it's true time setting.
All that aside, if you are simply a collector of film versions of Jane Eyre and want to add this to your collection, go ahead. It tells the story - barely - and will be one more off your check-list to gather dust on the shelf!
I expected more. George C Scott is a brilliant actor, but even his acting can not save this sinking adaptation of Jane Eyre. The Film is faded and the edits horrible. The dialogue does not follow the book even faintly close. Suzannah York hardly has the look of an 18 year old and the 70s makeup and false lashes do not help. She plays a very cold and calculating Jane.
Hpwever it is interesting to watch and compare with the other versions of jane Eyre if you can get this on the cheap
While the editing of this DVD is not good (appears to be recorded from a VHS), the movie storyline itself is wonderful. I have watched it several times since making this DVD purchase. I love the music and have recently purchased the soundtrack. The "love theme" from Jane Eyre is the real reason I wanted to see the movie. As a George C. Scott fan, I knew the acting would be tremendous, and it did not come up short. If you can get past the editing, the movie is entertaining and enjoyable. I prefer this particular version of Jane Eyre due to the music.
George C. Scott is wonderful in this movie. I think this is the best of all the Jane Eyre movies. This movie was made in Englkand but was only showen on TV in the United States. This is realy wonderful.
