For avid touring and racing bicycle enthusiasts, this is a must read. It would be good for those winter months when it's easier to spend time with a good book. Most everybody knows who Lance Armstrong is, but few would know the story of his life, the details of his battle with cancer, his recovery, and his run to winning the Tour de France...7 times. It was a very interesting read; Sally Jenkins did a great job!
I just thoroughly enjoyed it. It was hard to put down!
The book is well written, and flows in a novel- book manner. The story of Lance Arrmstrong is well known, but this book, gives us the details behind the comeback. And that Lance Armstrongs' recovery was not by his true will alone, but by also the love and guidance of a strong-willed mother and devoted friends. It reinforces the need for second opinions in urgent and specialized medical medicine and procedures. It shows the reader the effects of cancer and chemotherapy on the person. It also reminds the reader the fragility of life, that anyone, at anytime, no matter how healthy or how fit one may be, a sudden life ending event can occur. My mother is a cancer survivor, and so is my brother. And because of their current state of good health, I sometimes forget that they had cancer, that they had surgery and radiation. That they had many times thought of not being cured, of dying. My family is truly blessed that they are here today and my mom was really happy that we had a family portrait taken this Christmas year. To those who ride bicycles, who knows what cancer is, who knows someone who has or had cancer, the story of Lance Armstrong is uplifting. But for those who has or had cancer, Lance Armstrong is an inspiration. I urge everyone to read this book, donate to his charity, but most of all LIVESTRONG.
I love this book for three reasons. First, it is beautifully written, standing above any nonfiction I've ever read. At times, the hard reality of having cancer is revealed with pen-point sharpness. Other times, the descriptions roll poetically like Lance through the clearing Alpine mist. Second, the book is informative. It gives an insider's view about both cancer treatment and professional cycling. Third, and best of all, it's an unvarnished story of the fighter, Lance Armstrong. His Texas-sized competitiveness, his temper, his foolishness, his family and friends, are candidly revealed. The world's greatest cyclist pulls through. The reader is pulled through, too, hoping that if we never stop battling and pulling one foot forward that pain will succumb victory. This is a story about the life-force that is in and around each of us.
This is a wonderful book! I enjoyed all the time when I read it. Lance Armstrong, one of the world's most famous cyclists, shares the story of his life, his battle with cancer, and his amazing victory over it. I’m a cycling fan and for me it was really interesting to read about how they compete and how hard is it!
Not as last, this book will more than likely get you to root for Lance Armstrong, and the other brave folks who have fought back, successfully, against cancer.
Thank you Lance
This is a great book for anyone who has cancer or a loved one with the disease. This book truly is "not about the bike". It's about surviving & making goals & dreams for yourself as you deal with your cancer diagnosis & treatment. It is about having very little chance of surviving but fighting for the chance you do have. I'm so glad to find these books at a discount as I give them to people when I hear of their cancer battle. Being a survivor, myself, I found such comfort & related to many things Lance wrote of that no one I knew personally would say to me. A must read for everyone! Cancer or no cancer!
