Movie synopsis
This slick sci-fi horror hybrid is the fourth adaptation of Jack Finney's THE BODY SNATCHERS to land on screens. Infused with modern details like text messaging and 24-hour cable news, THE INVASION updates the classic story for today's tech-centric world. After the space shuttle Patriot crashes unexpectedly, people across America begin to exhibit strange behavior. Psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman, BEWITCHED) begins to notice the change in those around her, including her ex-husband, Tucker Kaufman (Jeremy Northam, GOSFORD PARK), who works at the CDC. Joined by her friend Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig, CASINO ROYALE), Carol attempts to unravel the mystery as she rescues her young son.THE INVASION gives Kidman a chance to act the part of an action hero. She runs in heels, crashes cars, and shoots guns, but she looks more like a Hitchcockian blonde than a latter-day heroine. Clad in steely grays, she perfectly matches the film's sober palette of neutrals. Genre veteran Veronica Cartright gives a good performance as one of Carol's patients, who suspects that her husband isn't himself. Cartright has appeared in sci-fi classics such as THE X-FILES and ALIEN, but she also starred in Philip Kaufman's 1978 version of the story. Unlike WAR OF THE WORLDS or SIGNS, the invaders here don't arrive in UFOs or appear as little green (or gray) men. Instead, the threat in THE INVASION is so creepy because the aliens look just like everyone else.

Editorial reviews

"[E]ffectively creepy and surprisingly unnerving....The new film illustrates why and how the power of the original story remains undiminished more than half a century after its creation."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (08/17/2007)

Good but not great......

Review For: The Invasion (DVD, 2008)

Nicole is nice to look at and her acting is superb. And it was fun to watch Daniel Craig on vacation from his James Bond role..a chance to see another side of his acting ability. I also very much enjoyed the character played by Jeffrey Wright who I had not seen since the Bill Murray movie Broken Flowers. Acting aside I enjoyed the story and I think this version compliments and sits proudly with its two predecessors. Excellent making-of features as well included.
This is an excellent retelling of the original 50's sci-fi flick "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers". Had me hooked right from the very beginning to the very end. My recommendation to all viewers is to first screen the original movie prior to this Kidman version because it then becomes interesting to notice the similarities between the two. However, of course, this is not necessary, for this new version stands quite nicely all by itself.
I thought Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig did a real nice job. And just for the record I have never been a fan of Nicole Kidman. I think if you look at the film as it's own entity instead of comparing it to the original Body Snatchers you make like it a little more.

Made Me Hope That They Didn't Find A Cure...

Review For: The Invasion (DVD, 2008)

Somebody has to warn Nicole Kidman to leave classics like this and the very similarly disappointing The Stepford Wives alone. This, the third remake of the 1956 classic (also redone correctly the first time in 1978), is quite frankly all bark and no bite. Gone are the classic pods from another world simply replaced with a virus that makes you all cheesy while you sleep to awaken new, refreshed, and emotionless. At least with the first two films the possessed/aliens got angry from time to time, but in this the group plays the unphased to the point of boredom. At least they tried to make the film different with instead of a young couple running switching it to mostly a mother and her child (who is conveniently immune), but the chase is typical cat and mouse and the ending has to be one of the most upbeat & weakest ones I've seen in quite awhile. Watched off of cable (where it belongs), spend your next money to burn on the excellent 1978 version instead.

This is a far different film than The Body Snatchers

Review For: The Invasion (DVD, 2008)

I had heard how The Invasion was just a remake of the old The Body Snatchers. The only similarity is the transition still takes place when a person sleeps.

The opening scene, with the crash of a shuttle, sets the stage into a near believable chain of events. While never a fan of Nicole Kidman, she fits the role quite well as a psychiatrist. Daniel Craig does a fine job along with the rest of the cast. The premise of the film is that aliens are taking over the earth by introducing their DNA into our systems and converting us. Outwardly we continue to appear the same.

The Invasion moves along quickly with a good bit of action. The minutes fly by and suddenly the finale'. Good film, even if you are not a Nicole Kidman fan.:)

A SciFi Thriller From Start To Finish FUN!!!

Review For: The Invasion (DVD, 2008)

As a viewer of the two previous "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" I was looking forward to this one and I was not disappointed! Even my husband, who normally isn't "scared", sat on the edge of his seat.
Nicole Kidman GREAT, super ending, (much better than the Donald Sutherland version)and Veronica Cartwright has a small role, she was in the second movie also.
LOVED IT!!!

The Invasion 2008

Being a real Invasion of the Body Snatchers and sci fi fan I really liked this remake. Kidman was great too! This is one movie that has never let me down no matter what version, they're all excellent!!! I also enjoyed the bluray option.
