Nightmute, Alaska has a big murder case: Teenage girl found scrubbed clean in a dump pile.
The local police need help which arrives in the form of seasoned L.A. cop Will Dormer (Al Pacino) and his younger parter Hap (Martin Donovan), both of whom are under investigation by the LAPD Internal Affairs.
The eager young local detective, Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank) is in awe of tough, on-target Dormer. She'd attended a seminar he conducted at one time and had studied many of his cases.
Dormer cuts right to the quick upon arriving in Nightmute and goes after the dead girl's abusive boyfriend but in the mix, he shoots his partner, Hap. Was it an accident or intentional?
While Ellie Burr follows up on this shooting, Dormer switches his focus on the eerie pulp fiction writer Walter Finch (Robin Williams). Meanwhile, the ever-present Alaskan summer sun is driving Dormer crazy to the point that he isn't sure of anything himself.
I don't recall hearing about this film when it was released but I'm glad I found it now. Pacino, Swank and Williams are terrific!
This film keeps the viewers on the egd eof their seats with the various twists and turns the ending is a heartbreaker that will leave yopu wnating more..Al Pacino plays a Cop with a checkered past not the evil type, but the kind that makes the guilty cringe..Robin Williams plays a writer with a terrible secret Hilary Swank plays a Cop wanting some excitement that she gets plenty of thanks to Pacino and Williams..When a young Girl is murdered two cops under investigation by IA is sent to help find her killer what they find instead is betrayal and murder that centers around not only the small Alaskan town of Nightmute, but they themselves..a definite 5 out of 5 bars on this one!!
Director Christopher Nolan follows up his smash Memento with Insomnia, a movie about Al Pacino tracking a killer in Alaska. Nolan's ability to disorientate and confuse the viewer puts you in Pacino's shoes, as he struggles with insomnia during the constant daylight of Alaska. Fantastic detective story.
If you're a big Robin Williams, Hillary Swank or Robert DiNiro fan, this might be worthwhile. But, I found it predictable and not well scripted. The tension that should exist in this type of film just isn't there. Williams does an interesting scene where he walks across a river on top of rolling logs. If you have nothing else to do, this would be a reasonable 90 minute distraction, but not worth the hype.
I bought it because I'd seen the ads quite some time ago and thought the cast could provide a pretty decent film. Not what I expected.
Al Pacino fans....this is one of his best films in years. The added bonus here is Robyn Williams as the villian. But wait! I don't want to give away the plot. If you haven't seen it, you don't know what you're missing! If you like drama & suspense, get this one for your collection. And by the way, this one also features Hillary Swank before Million Dollar Baby!
Don't miss it!
