They will forevermore be known for the 17-minute title track of this, their second album."In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (a poke at singer/organist Doug Ingle's gruff, John Kay-like delivery of "In the Garden of Eden") is built around one of the most memorable riffs of the '60s. It's filled out by long solos from all concerned, especially from drummer Ron Bushy, whose lengthy extemporizing provided the template for Big Rock Drum Solos for decades to come. The rest of the tunes reveal that Iron Butterfly did indeed possess some pop sensibility to leaven the heaviness; "Flowers and Beads" in particular is simultaneously a romantic '60s pop-rock ballad and a subtle but surprising swipe at flower power culture.

Iron Butterfly "Vida" Remastered

Created: 11/13/09
Despite being a huge IB fan, there can be no doubt that their music is overly dated & polarizing. One can only take so much drenched organ & falsetto voclas in one lunch! However, this Cd is a unique window to anyone looking to stare straight into the sound's of the 60's. The title track is excellent & Erik Bruanns guitar at just 17 is outstanding as you follow his lines through the song. His lead is superb imo & was voted one of the best all time in Rolling Stone mag. Lee Dorman's bass lines are rarely in sync & he plays freely on many songs which give an interesting sound to some of the songs. Most Anything You Want also features Bruann's exc. guitar leads drenching with reverb/echo. Are You Happy has a lot of power behind it & Doug Ingle's vocals I think are pretty good here. Termination is Bruanns contribution & a good one, again listen for Dorman's "everywhere" bass which supplements the song. Ron Bushy's histroic drum solo in "Vida" speaks for itself. A good time to put the headphones on & just let the drums go back & forth culminating in the flare up near the end. Flowers & Beads is stereotypical 60's love & My Mirage is a real sleeper here. Despite being quite unorthodox, the song will grow on you as it is a song about a vision that someone would like to take to the world. Overall I think there is NO other CD which captures the 60's quite like this one. My thought is this...it will take some time, but if you stick with it, the bubble gum, lovey dovey stuff will catch ya sleepin! Overall their best effort I think. For an ATCO recording, Rhino did a decent job of getting it pretty clean.

In The Garden of Eden

This album was originally released in 1968. It has 6 tracks plus 2 bonus versions of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ( A live & a single). This band hailed from Hollywood and looked for ways to combine rock music with the spritual. This is probably the best known album of the 60's and In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida is one of the most used songs for movies and tv. It defined a generation seeking individuality and peace, instead of warfare and conformity. I have always like Iron Butterfly and their music and recommend this cd.

I saw Iron Butterfly in concert with Jefferson Airplane, and Blue Cheer in Phoenix in 1968 or 69...my first early taste of "Heavy Metal Music".This Deluxe CD is a real toe tapper.I appreciate the three versions of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida included!Perhaps my favorite being the live recording, thick with bass and innovative guitar riffs and effects! This stays in number three slot of my six CD player in my truck!

Fu-get-a-bout-it!

Bought this cd because I have a few friends who always ask me to play it at my parties. I remember back in the day when this record first came out. I liked the song In-a-Gadda-da-Vida, bought the album, and it really sucked. After awhile, even the title track started annoying me. You had to be smok'in something to get into this stuff. Not to mention that the sound quality on this Delulxe version really stinks. Save your money and your ears. Highly NOT recomended.
