Immortals follows in the style of other current sword & sandals films (Wrath of, and Clash of the Titans)updated with state of the art digital effects. What separates Immortals from its ilk is beautiful art direction (compared with the great art of Caraveggio on the packaging), and excellent digital effects. It ends here. Lead Henry Cavill does a workmanlike job as Theseus, but there's a lack of intensity that makes you care about his struggles. The real star here is Mickey Rourke as the villainous king, Hyperion, ruthlessly out to conquer the ancient world. He chews the scenery here, but at times look as if he walked off the set of "The Wrestler" wearing a breastplate. Another issue: there are many scenes that are dark and murky, have to view this movie in a really dark room to follow the story. Positively, you could say this adds to the supernatural aspect, negatively, it might be to hide less than stellar production values.
At least the Blu ray picture and sound are excellent. Illustrations for the packaging have a tagline, "From the Producers of 300", missing on my disc set. Maybe they knew something! This is not 300! Good for an evenings entertainment.
The storyline of the film is a dud, no wonder the critics excoriated the film, perhaps if the director paid more attention to the mythological history of theseus instead of making his own personal spin on Greek mythology but then again, I should have known better since the director is the same one who made that dreadfull remake of 300 Spartan.
The 3D is not eye popping in your face. They did not make this Real 3D where things pop out of your screen. So I give a 5/10 for the 3D. The movie itself in not 300. It takes a while for the action to take place and it's reminiscent of Lord of the Rings as far as the mass army look goes. It's a violent movie showing throats cut, limbs chopped off and bodies exploding. It did not have the magical epic feel I was expecting. If you are a girl and you like six packs and lots of blood...this is for you.
The ''producers of 300'' have gotten high billing in ads for Immortals, another swords-and-sandals mini-epic in which men dressed like Hellenic gay pride paraders wrestle and preen and cross swords (in a perfectly hetero-virile way, of course).
But once you've spent two hours watching amber waves of abs ripple across the screen, you might think bigger credit really ought to go to the actors' personal trainers. After all, it's the size of his pecs — and certainly not his personality — that designates Theseus (Henry Cavill) as this story's hero. He's a stonemason from a small village, and his single definable character trait — a hot temper — only serves to move him from one bicep-flexing fight to another with minimal dialogue in between.
The strengths of "Immortals" are fantastic fight scenes and artistic, original design. In the style of "300", the filmmakers worked hard to create visually stunning sets and costumes which becomes especially utilized in the blu-ray.
Mickey Rourke as Hyperion is wonderful. Henry Cavill as Theseus did well. (I liked him in The Tudors and was anxious to see him in this.)
My sole complaint is that, like other films of this genre, the dialogue and characterization is overly idealic.
If you are building a blu-ray collection and need to add new action film, Immortals is a fun film.
