The Tubescreamer is extremely simple to handle. The three knobs for gain, tone and level are just what they are, and really no matter where they are you get a good sound. It's just about finding what you like. This is a very solid pedal. I like the actual stompbox part, and that its neither a noisy pebble to step on or a flimsy feeling Boss button. It's a nice well sized metal piece that moves very smoothly. It's pretty well weighted, etc. all the knobs seem in good check as well. I love the smooth and creamy drive it gets and the seasick green finish. Compared to any other drives, whether it's the Boss OD or the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive, etc. it kicks total ass. It's got everything you need, nothing you don't!
I must first state that I have no pedal to compare this to, that being said, this pedal does what I wanted it to do, give a little extra bite. I first played this through my little line6 spider3 on clean. It adds tone and bite to clean tones. I switched to the modern metal channel and for me its not gainy enough by itself. With the pedal it adds tone and bite, harmonics are clearer. through the insane channel its less noticeable but if you get unity gain going it sounds good. Next I played it through a carvin v3 with celestion v30's. I'm still working on it but it adds enough that I can play convincing death metal with just the tube gain from the amp and the ts9. This pedal is a good tone booster for any situation. I am going to try the other two chips to see if there's a difference. I am more happy with this pedal than any other ive tried. I digital sounding distortion, this is a more organic approach. I'd love to hear it before an engl head. Jeff loomis relies on the ts9 for his tone, enough said.
THIS IS AN OVERDRIVE PEDAL, NOT DISTORTION!! If you're looking for fuzzy, chunky grunge, don't buy this pedal. if you want some sweet classic rock overdrive tones, pick this guy up. Pair it with an ALL tube amp thats cookin already and it'll add some major balls to your tone!
Every player needs one pedal of this kind. if it's a bad monkey, a blues dist, ts9, it's up to the player. It shines on boosting the signal, gives clarity and character to the sound. I love it ! This mods are great, adding deffinition to the notes and improving tone.
I would not recomend it as a discortion or overdrive standing alone, for me this is a booster, with a little bitte. Sounds like magic before my amp overdrive channel.
I recomend it!
I bought it because I wanted it. I would buy another one if I needed it. This Pedal along with a couple others are the best combination of Guitar Pedals there ever was, and Still is. But like this one they are ALL older pedals and have to be bought used. Thats the only way to get them!
The other Pedals you should have along iwth the 80's TS-9is a Boss DM-2 ( either chip works fine ) and a close to 1966 Dunlop Wah Pedal. With these 3 pedals you sound as good as anyone else out there. Their All just hard to find. But Dunlop released a newer version ( just as plain and simple as the original 1966 )of the 1966. It works fine, I bought one.
