The book may be worth reading once however, the writing is juevenille, and the plot is generic at may parts. The worst Part was the "foreshadowing" the book was entirely too predictable, I could guess the outcome of the story and many small events during the story well before they came. Additionally this book lacked depth, there was no real sub plot(s), entirely from one perspective, no side story, no extra element, simply follows around a girl in a fight to the death.
On the other hand it was a pretty interesting concept of a post USA north America, it reminded me of elements of 1984, and Fahrenheit 451, but far less thought out and at the level of a freshman in high school. The characters were not complete morons as in other books such as the Inheritance series, the characters however seemed simple and flat, and despite more than a dozen important characters you only really learn about 3 or 4 making the book drone on about he or she did this instead of a developed characterization and individual personality for each one.
Overall an average score because of the level of the reading and minimal literary skill needed to write these books. BORROW FROM LIBRARY instead of purchasing because not good enough to read 5 times like so many other series.
Mockingjay and all the books in the series were UNBELIEVABLY GREAT! Regarding Mockingjay the story line was fiction but her verbal depiction of the life of a soldier in cantonment, training and battle was uncannily accurate for anyone without military experience and exposure to hostile action. I could not believe the accuracy (having been there and done that). The barracks life, the training, the interaction amongst the soldiers (i.e.: the main and other characters) and the description of the battles were so accurate. She even worked in the old adage that goes, "no matter how careful the battle plan it will go awry in the first five minutes".
In all these books one just cannot believe that one is reading fiction. Granted some of the scenarios might have weapons and opponents that are science fiction but the flavor and reality of battle and survival shine through in a most realistic way in all her books in this series.
This book, Mockingjay, indeed the whole series, is one of the best set of books I have ever read. If you don't buy. or at least read the entire series, if you are even remotely interested in the realities of military life, survival and combat as well as a great and believable plot, then, in the words of Mr. T, you are a FOOL!
I completely devoured these books. They are so addictive with their non-stop action and engaging characters. I really grew to care about these characters like I haven't since Harry Potter. The books show an interesting 1984-esque reality with a sweet teen romance twist. Despite the fact that the main characters are mostly teenagers, I really related to them as an adult woman. Such a fresh and interesting story line!
These books are for all ages! My great grandfather could not put them down. He even bought his own set and has also seen the first movie from the TRILOGY!
Suzanne Colins captures a time that one may actually live in one day. Her writing along with her imagination is incredible! The books keep you on the edge of your sit! THEY BRING BACK THE JOY OF READING! Please buy the trilogy! You will not regret doing so! These books bring SCIFI alive BUT I have never enjoyed SCIFI until now! I bought the books for my teen, only to find myself, and other adults reading them too! My daughter turned off her cell, computer, etc. TO READ! Her friends have done the same! She is currently reading the last book in the trilogy- they are all equally WONDERFUL! The wand has retired and the vampires have run off into the sunset- NOW IT IS TIME FOR "THE HUNGER GAMES~ TRILOGY!" Any book that brings the joy of reading back up and above a teens cell/tech gadgets is PRICELESS (in my humble opinion) Thank you for taking the time to read my review!
Purchased this set after having a friend tell me how addicting they are..... When the set arrived, I was excited to start reading (while not even knowing what it was about). Finished the first book in 3 days only reading it after work (My teenage son read it in two days). Book two is just as good and finished it in only a couple of days as well (As did the teenage son... wow, he is reading for the heck of it). We are both reading the third and final book and the beginning was a little hard to get into, but is picking up, all I need it more time off of work so that I can get it finished! LOVE THIS SERIES!
