Movie synopsis
The characters in Victor Hugo's 1831 novel about lonely bell-ringer Quasimodo and his adventures with the beautiful Esmerelda come vividly and musically to life--even the stone gargoyles! This updated '90s version features Quasimodo as an awkward youth, a departure from the Hugo text. Featuring the voices of Tom Hulce, Jason Alexander, Demi Moore, Kevin Kline and David Ogden Stiers. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

Original only ok, sequel unnecessary

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I remember back when Pocahontas was released I was not looking forward to it but when I saw it I thought it was great.

So, the year after when the original film was released I was hoping for the same. I was disappointed.

The film is just OK. Nothing special. When the film starts you think you are looking at Beauty and the Beast. No. The music is a disappointment. No characters you remember after the fact. Although they did you some names for characters voice, Jason Alexander at the height of Seinfeld fame, Moore. No memorable scenes. You do not remember the film after you just saw it.

I remember at Disneyland that summer they had a show for the film. Never saw it.

Animation is fine but not usual at this point Disney standards. To me it looks like Saturday morning animation.

They have a making of extra. For this one & Brother Bear released at the same day as the Mulan blu ray. Mulan, a bigger hit, did NOT get one.

A sequel. NOT needed for this film at all.

And, Disney now going cheap on blu ray releases. NO art work on the discs.

The original film is just fine, nothing more to say about it. The sequel unnecessary & a cheap blu ray package.

NOT what I expected from DISNEY!

When my husband and I popped in this movie we expected to watch a sweet story about how Quasimodo's friendship with Esmeralda helped him develop confidence. Instead, we found ourselves SHOCKED that we were watching a DISNEY movie that is supposed to be geared toward CHILDREN. While I know that Disney tries to include some things in thier films that appeal to the adults in the audience, in my opinion, they went WAY too far on this one. It contains some themes that are just not appropriate for children and that unfortunately overshadow the message of friendship they might originally have been trying to convey. I would STRONGLY caution ANY parent to watch this before allowing a child to view it.

First off, the music in this film is very heavy and oppressive- a lot from the pipe organ. There is also a song sung by Esmeralda, the heroine, that is very religiously charged. These serve to set the stage for some very dark themes, including violence, extreme cruelty and forbidden sexual desire. (YES, you read that correctly).

The movie begins with Frollo (Quasimodo's master) killing Quasimodo's gypsy mother (who was fleeing from him) on the steps of Notre Dame- and it doesn't stop there. Esmeralda, the heroine, is depicted as a gypsy who dances for money. Much like an adult entertainer she says that she dances to "pay the bills" and her genre includes swinging around a pole. Not exactly something I want my daughter to glamorize and emulate. This movie also sets up a love triangle of sorts between Quasimodo, the "lovely" Esmeralda and Phoebus, a brave and handsome soldier. To make things worse, there are several scenes in which Frollo appears to be lusting after Esmeralda- for example the scene in which he smells her hair!!! How creepy is that coming from Disney!!! Now, I could go on about how in the end Esmeralda chooses to become romantically involved with the handsome Phoebus rather than the "ugly" Quasimodo, but I think I've already said enough...

very great movie that is entertaining to everyone!

The movie is just great with the story and heroism and very sentimental. It is expresses alot about alot of things. It teaches how not to treat people cause they are different than you. It teaches how you can change when you know what are more important to you in life. It teaches about how to love someone unconditionally without having to even know them. It is just a great movie for the whole family alike.
