Hugo the Movie Star (or "Jungledyret Hugo 2") is the touching story about a rare forest animal Hugo who gets captured and taken from the jungle by greedy movie producer Conrad Cupmann, who plans to create a whole TV franchise (and quite a bit of profit) from the rare animal. With the help of his old friend, Rita, he manages to escape again.
The movie is actually a sequel to Go Hugo Go ("Jungledyret Hugo" in Danish), which is also included on the DVD. In the first movie, Conrad is trying to capture Hugo for just a single movie. In Hugo's bid to escape, he ends up a stowaway on a cruise ship heading towards the city. As he is lost and confused in the city, he is introduced to a colorful selection of characters, including Rita the fox, who quickly becomes his best friend and helps him back home again.
In both movies, the story is accompanied by various songs sung by the animals, but Hugo's true charm comes from it's smart writing and lovable characters. The movies are kept light-hearted with a fair amount of humor to keep younger viewers engaged.
Buyers of the US Miramax DVD beware. The original Danish version soundtrack has been replaced which a much lower-budget completely synthesized soundtrack. There is a big noticeable difference in quality between the two. Also, the voice acting in the English version is often extremely awkward at times, with characters often speaking (or making noises) over blank track that doesn't require it. The first movie is also 5 minutes shorter than the Danish version due to scenes that were removed. On the IMDb message boards, the Danish producers even criticized the English version and stated they had no involvement in its release.
However, despite the DVDs set back, the Jungledyret Hugo franchise is still a fun light-heated series which would definitely be enjoyed by all. If you speak Danish, then I thoroughly suggest you buy the Danish DVDs (also available online) which are much better, but they do not include an English language track or subtitles. Either way, this is a great series you don't want to miss!
