Movie synopsis
Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Brian Selznick's award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret stars Asa Butterfield, as an orphan boy who lives in a Parisian train station. Sent to live with his drunken uncle after his father's death in a fire, Hugo learned how to wind the massive clocks that run throughout the station. When the uncle disappears one day, Hugo decides to maintain the clocks on his own, hoping nobody will catch on to him squatting in the station. His natural aptitude for engineering leads him to steal gears, tools, and other items from a toy-shop owner who maintains a storefront in the station. Hugo needs these purloined pieces in order to rebuild a mechanical man that was left in the father's care at the museum -- the restoration was a project father and son did together. When Georges (Ben Kingsley), the old man who runs the toy stand, catches on to the thievery, he threatens to turn Hugo over to the station's lone police officer (Sacha Baron Cohen, who makes every effort to send any parentless child in the station to the orphanage. But Hugo's run-in with Georges leads to a friendship with the elderly gentleman's goddaughter, Isabelle (Chloe Grace Moretz), who unknowingly possesses the last item Hugo needs to make the mechanical man work again.

Editorial reviews

"Martin Scorsese's love of the movie medium shines through almost every frame of HUGO, which culminates in a creation -- a fascinating re-creation -- that could only have been achieved by a filmmaker with all of the medium's resources at his command."
Wall Street Journal (11/25/2011)

4 stars out of 4 -- "HUGO is unlike any other film Martin Scorsese has ever made, and yet possibly the closest to his heart: a big-budget, family epic in 3-D, and in some ways, a mirror of his own life."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (11/18/2011)

"A passionate brief for film preservation wrapped in a fanciful tale of childhood intrigue and adventure, HUGO dazzlingly conjoins the earliest days of cinema with the very latest big-screen technology."
Hollywood Reporter - Todd McCarthy (11/17/2011)

"[A]n enchantment from Martin Scorsese....It’s serious, beautiful, wise to the absurdity of life and in the embrace of a piercing longing."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (11/23/2011)

"[T]he manner in which the film blends the tale of an imperiled boy and the history of cinema makes for an ambitious and fanciful ride."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/20/2011)

5 stars out of 5 -- "Magical and imaginative, this eye-popping masterpiece from director Martin Scorsese will transport audiences to a place they won't believe."

I loved it. = Enchanting = Paris Rail Station = and Old movies! good story

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I loved this film. I know it's received mixed reviews, but I found it enchanting.

Yes the color seems a bit too enhanced at times, but I love all things French.

I hadn't read anything when I was invited to see the film, so I had no idea what it was going to be. So it goes along very much like a children's film, but then goes into this most delightful homage to early film. And then the story really starts to make sense.

The story plays out much like a clock work puzzle and the end is what makes all the parts make sense.

I really enjoyed it. And again if you love all things French, as I do, you never get tired of spending a couple hours in France, even if it's only in a movie theater.

It is a bit strange that all the French have British accents, but that's typical of British films... even ones made by American's I guess.

This is entertainment the whole family can enjoy.

Watch it.

Cheers and Blessings, Max Rainet.

A master director's homage to the birth of motion pictures!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Martin Scorsese has done something wonderful here. He has created a film classic like the Wizard of Oz that shares his love and respect for the dawn of movies that reveals even more on repeated viewings. It is the story of Hugo Cabret, a young boy abandoned in life, trying to survive living in a Paris railway station and his relationship with George Melies (the famous silent film pioneer)now down on his luck owning a toy booth there. This is a film where 3D is finally an essential part. You are not hammered with special effects. From the subtle falling snowflakes to the giant gear mechanisms of the station, the 3D creates a palpable environment. Sir Ben Kingsley is superb as Melies; you can feel his torment! Asa Butterfield is excellent as Hugo. Even Sacha Baron Cohen rises to the occasion as the station manager. The other cast members are uniformly excellent (kudos to Christopher Lee's understated performance). This is a rare and special film. A MUST HAVE!

Hugo is a wonderful movie with amazing visual effects. It is an adventurous and inspiring movie the whole family can watch together. All of the actors do a great job and the settings in Paris are very well done. Well worth the price to add this movie to your collection.

I wanted to see this movie in the theater and it was gone before I got to see it. I had heard so much about it,and decided to order it. Got it-Watched it- and LOVED IT!! It is one of those movies you will want to watch again, and again. Magical in ways and yet a reality that makes you think twice. The chain of events in ones life that can totally change everything.

Expected better.

No, I would not recommend this product.

Although this film was masterfully shot in 3d, the 3d blu-ray contains image ghosting in most scenes that can be quite distracting even when viewed on top of the line equipment. The 7.1 audio is very good though. Stick to the 2d version at home and hope a later release will fix the issues.
