This is one of my all time light-hearted favorites! Davis (Steve Martin) is a single architect who has been in love with Becky all of his life. But when he proposes marriage to her with a dream house he has built for them to live in she turns him down flat, as he does not meet her expectations for husband material- too much of a dreamer (so she says). While trying to get over Becky, Davis pours out his heart to Gwen (Goldie Hawn), a waitress, who lives a very unconventional life based on... lies... When he tells her about his recent rejection by Becky and the house he built for them that is now empty, Gwen moves into the house and begins a new life as "Mrs. Davis-" unannounced to him, of course. Once he discovers her plot everyone in town, including Becky and even his parents believe that he and Gwen are married. The results are a quite funny and enjoyable 90 minutes. This is definitely and oldie, but a goodie! It is one of my favorites to doze off with when I can't fall asleep at night. The only problem with this movie is that throughout the show everyone keeps referring to Davis as "wild," "impulsive," "crazy" and so forth. However, the character of Davis is always wearing dockers and a tie... and seems anything but wild and crazy... I just don't buy it. Still a great movie though.
This movie is successful at something that rarely happens anymore. It is designed to be a neo-classic, and hopes to stand up to the likes of movies made with stars like Veronica Lake, Carry Grant, and the like. It delivers the goods with a story that is actually believable, in the snowball rolling down hill and becoming an avalanche tail of one lie leading to another, and another, and the strange tendency of some lies to actually become the truth on the back end.
In the whole of the movie, there is only one thing that I find unbelievable, and that is not even of of the lies that moves the story forward. The one thing I find incredible is that Newton could have been able to build a house for his fiancee in a small town, with the intention of using it to propose to her, without ANYONE telling her about it, or without her knowing anything about the house being built. It is established that the parents knew about it, and if they know, their friends knew that this was how he intended to propose to his life long sweetheart. That kind of juicy gossip doesn't stay under the lid in a small town.
All the lies, and counter lies told by Goldie Hawn's character Jessica/Gwen are so artfully believable that even if you think she is a liar, you find it credible enough to think she is just exaggerating the truth.
The day I watched this movie in the theater, I vowed that I would buy it. I owned it on VHS, and have not purchased it yet again on DVD so that I have it in widescreen.
That is how much I have enjoyed this film, and I am confident that you will as well.
I love this movie. It is such a wonderful love story that is very different from the classic love stories. This movie takes you into a world where nothing is hoenstly true, but it doesn't matter because you enjoy the stories so much that you allow them to become part of the your life. Steve Martin is wonderfully hilarious as well as the biggest sweet heart you will ever watch. Together Martin and Goldie Hawn really bring this movie to life and welcom you into their crazy line of make believe.
Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin are great in this movie. "Gwen" is a free spirit :) She says what she thinks and acts accordingly. :) "Newton" is very, very uptight! But thankfully he comes around in the end. There is nothing deep and dark at all...never dwells on why Gwen is the way she is which is nice. She's just who she is and you love her. :)I wouldn't call this movie hilarious but it gives you lots of smiles leaves you with good feelings. It's a 9 smiles movie. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin are the perfect pair to pull off a great movie like this! Truly funny in everyway this movie would be the perfect addition to any romantic comedy lovers collection!
