Movie synopsis
Following up his award-winning martial-arts drama HERO, director Zhang Yimou (JU DOU, RAISE THE RED LANTERN) tells an intricately detailed love story in the swordfighting epic HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, set during the final days of the Tang Dynasty. A mysterious group called the Flying Daggers is a dangerous threat to the government, so police captain Leo (Andy Lau) sends his right-hand man, Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro), undercover to try to find the rebels' location. Jin, a notorious playboy, pretends he is a roving warrior called "Wind" and befriends Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a blind dancer who is believed to be the daughter of the former leader of the Daggers. As he leads her across the countryside, they are "attacked" by government soldiers--but these battles are staged by Leo in order to convince Mei that Jin is on her side. But when a general orders that Mei must be captured at any cost, the fighting turns real, and Jin must decide between his loyalty to his job and his growing love for Mei. Meanwhile, Mei battles her feelings for Jin as well, trying to hide her true self. Zhang's gorgeous, compelling film is filled with beautiful singing and dancing, marvelous costumes, and wonderful locations; the scene in the Bamboo Forest is unforgettable, as is the Echo Game, which Leo and Mei play in the Peony Pavilion. There are also twists throughout the film and by the time the end comes, audiences will be spinning their heads in awe and amazement at the neverending wonders of this special movie. The film is dedicated to Anita Mui, who was to have a starring role before her unexpected death.

beautiful movie with fluffy plot...

Review For: House of Flying Daggers (DVD, 2005)

Zhang Yimou is at it again, beautifully choreographing unbelievable fight sequences set in even more unbelievable settings (bamboo forest this time). Zhang Zi Yi also delivers an enrapturing performance as a blind court dancer. The chemistry between her character and the two male leads is also red hot. There are at least two unforgettable scenes that will leave you gasping for air and then asking for more.

All the ingredients are there for a great movie. But unlike Yimou's previous martial arts movie, Hero, House of Flying Daggers falls short of its potential. The movie opens with great expectations, setting the stage for a great love triangle between Zhang Ziyi and the two male leads. However, it trips on its own complex plot and ultimately ends abruptly and leaves you unsatisfied.

Still, it is worth seeing for the choreography and if you appreciate the genre.

A Beautiful Martial Arts/Love Story

After "Hero", Zhang Yimou has produced another stunning visual epic; "House of Flying Daggers". Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau, and the beautiful Ziyi Zhang form the trio of lovers in this martial arts/romance film with great cinematography and CGI effects. The Dance Hall scene is worth the price of admission alone! Where Sony cut corners: the Blu ray transfer is good, but not significantly better than the DVD release. Also, the audio is Dolby 5.1, not remastered into one of the HD audio formats,2 omissions especially for this price. Save some money and purchase the standard DVD, you'll still be enjoying a great film.

ZHANG ZIYI AT HER BEST

Review For: House of Flying Daggers (DVD, 2005)

I BOUGHT IT 4 TIMES 2 TIMES FROM CHINA (THANKS TO EBAY) AND AT CHINA CITY(A LOCAL OUTLET HERE IN MIAMI)FOR THE DIFFERENT COVERS AND VERSIONS. O.K THE MALE LEADS ARE HANDSOME AND ZIYI ZHANG IS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. IF THEY JUST WALKED AROUND FOR AND HOUR AND A HALF THEY COULD MAKE A MOVIE. NOW TAKE THESE THREE AND PUT THEM IN A VISUALLY STUNNING, TASTEFUL MARTIAL ARTS, TWISTING PLOT, LOVE AND DECEIT, SECRET SOCIETY, ACTION MOVIE, BEAUTIFULLY WOVEN AMONG THE MOST MAGNIFICANT SCENERY YOU CAN IMAGINE. NOW YOU HAVE HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS. JUST BUY THIS MOVIE.
WITHOUT POLISHING THE APPLE, E-BAY IS THE BEST SOURCE FOR THE DIRECT FROM CHINA DVDS. I PREFER THEM BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY, THE COVERS, AND THE PRICE,BE SURE THEY HAVE ENGLISH SUBTITLES. EVEN WITH FREIGHT THEY ARE HALF THE PRICE OF THE LOCAL CHINA DVD OUTLETS, 'OF COURSE BE DILIGENT AS TO WHO YOU BUY FROM AND THE COMBINED SHIPPING, ETC.'

A review from someone who has good taste.

hannah's review is pathetic. That review probably came from someone who's idea of a great film is Doom or The Fast and the Furious. First off, the film is Chinese. Having said that, one should understand the cultural differences between China and the US. This is a beautiful film, one that can appeal to most people. Zhang Yimou is a fantastic director. His use of color is astounding. I must admit that I enjoyed Hero a lot more than this film. The action is great (although sparse), the music is great, and the acting is great (I love Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro). If artsy films aren't your cup of tea, stay away. I really hope people give movies like this a chance. Asian cinema is a breath of fresh air.

It really is that good.

Review For: House of Flying Daggers (DVD, 2005)

There have been plenty of films released that received massive critic acclaim, but once I threw it into my DVD player it took all I had not to gag and run screaming into the night. House of Flying Daggers received every kind of praise a critic could come up with and for once, the film is better than the hype.

Every frame of the film is sharp, colorful, and in every other way beautiful. The cast shows off their many talents with extraordinary skills in swordplay, dancing, singing, and dramtic acting. One of my favorite aspects of the film is the director's use of the changing seasons to accent the action and drama of the story.

I could not find a single flaw in the entire movie. Buy this. Stop reading this review right now, and buy this DVD. You will not be disappointed.

Why are you still here? I said stop reading. Go on, buy the DVD. You'll feel better.
