This movie is based on Cynthia Voigt's best-selling adolescent literature novel of the same title. In the story, the Tillerman kids are left in a parking lot by their mentally ill mother. After a day goes by, they worry that they'll be split among foster homes. They set out to find their estranged grandmother, whom they've never met. They walk hundreds of miles, sleep in cemeteries and survive with odd jobs. When they finally meet their grandmother (well played by Anne Bancroft), she is less than warm to the idea of taking them in.
Although the movie can't touch on all the points of the book, it does a nice job glossing over some of the unnecessary details. Anne Bancroft is especially believable as the grandmother, as her sharp tongue and piercing eyes cut through Dicey just like they did Benjamin in The Graduate!
A good family movie, and especially rewarding after reading the book. Can be enjoyed by children in the intermediate grade levels.
THIS MOVIE MADE ME HAPPY, IT'S A GREAT FAMILY MOVIE. YOU TAKE A SLIGHTLY OLD
GRANDMA WHO'S SET IN HER WAYS, AND LIKES TO BE LEFT ALONE, AND SPEAKS HER MIND
WHO SUDDENLY HAS THREE GRANDCHILDREN SHOW UP AT HER DOOR, WITH NO WHERE ELSE TO
GO. THE MOVIE STARTS GETTING GOOD THEN. IT JUST SHOWS, HOW YOU CAN LOVE CHILDREN, AND HOW THEY CAN JUST MELT YOUR HEART WITH LOVE. IT WAS VERY GOOD ACTING FROM THE CHILDREN IN THIS MOVIE. I LIKED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. I'M GLAD I
OWM THIS. ANNE BANCROFT COULDN'T BE BETTER.
Everybody in this movie did an excellent job! Great family movie, although may have to explain some things to very young children so they don't think this is what to do if somebody abandons you, or get lost. etc....
Don't let me give you the wrong idea that it's bad for young ones because it's not. There are young kids in it who play GREAT roles, and are well behaved, etc..
Anne Bancroft plays the perfect bitter, but still softhearted, grandmother. I love the way the towns people speak of her and then she shocks them.
Very touching and somewhat comical with the cousin.
You will have to watch it to know what all this means :-) I bet you watch it more than once!! ENJOY!
I saw part of this movie on tv. I didn't get to watch the whole thing. I came in on the middle of this movie. But I was so intriged with what I did get to see, that I just had to try and find the movie to buy. This is Ann Bancroft at her finest. A must see movie for the whole family to enjoy and trust me, ALL will enjoy it. This is a movie that just makes you feel good. And after you watch it, will make you think that you can do anything even if people says that it is impossible. There is not one thing about this movie that I disliked. EXCELLENT MOVIE for the entire family.
A Family film. Good story line about family, love and forgiving. Will tell others to see it. Siblings who stick together and work as a team to stay together.
