| Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, is a peaceful sort who lives in a cozy hole in the Shire, a place where adventures are uncommon - and rather unwanted. So when the wizard Gandalf whisks him away on a treasure-hunting expedition with a troop of rowdy dwarves, he's not entirely thrilled. Encountering ruthless trolls, beastly orcs, gigantic spiders, and hungry wolves, Bilbo discovers within himself astonishing strength and courage. And at the ultimate confrontation with the fearsome dragon Smaug, the hobbit will brave the dangers of the dark and dragon fire alone and unaided. This deluxe collector's edition of Tolkien's modern classic is boxed and bound in green leatherette with gold and red foil rune stamping on the spine and cover. The text pages are printed in black with green accents. It includes five full page illustrations in full color and many more in two color in addition to Thror's map -- all prepared by the author. J.R.R. Tolkien's own description for the original edition: "If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the ancient time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the way (as he did) -- if you do not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a rule preferred comfort to excitement. But this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins will give you a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) becoming rather rare. They do not like noise." | |

This hardcover collector's edition Hobbit is very beautiful and a pleasure just to look at on your shelf.
If you are one of the minority who have not read this treasured tale, you must get this book in some form. I'd say borrow it fromthe library, but save yourself a trip and purchase it. It is a story you will want to share with your kids and may revisit yourself in the future.
The story is a classic and suitable for any age. The timeless tale of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit of the Shire, who sets out on an adventure with a wizard and band of racous dwarves to become worldly, wise and one of the most important people in all of Middle-Earth. There is much great adventure within the covers of this book and you will be taken away to a much more majestic world with fantastic creatures and events.
Tolkien is truly a master of the tale and has created a beautiful world, with incredibly complex characters, beautiful languages, rituals and grandeur. To look at the work alone is amazing at the amount of energy adn brilliance needed to create such a fantastic masterpiece.
I wanted a copy of The Hobbit to go with my Lord of the Rings trilogy. The day it came I admired the book then turned to the first page "just to look at it." I didn't put the book down until I had finished it! I loved every word of it.
I love Tolkein's clever, engrossing storytelling. His trilogy is enthralling, but it takes a major time commitment to get through all three books. The Hobbit is an easier, shorter read with all the fun and excitement of a fantastical adventure. It's tone is lighter than the somber trilogy.
The Hobbit is a wonderful book for adults as well as older children. It serves as an introduction to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy or stands alone as a classic in its own right.
The Hobbit is the magnificent beginning to the now popular Lord of the Rings, Trilogy. This book should be read by anyone who loves the fantasy genre, but especially for those that have enjoyed the Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit provides, (with amazingly vivid detail) a stunning desription of Middle-Earth and some of it's history. It also introduces you to Gandolf and Bilbo and how they became friends; as well as the trecherous Golem and the story of how Bilbo came to posess "The Ring". All of this is wrapped into a fantastic adventure that really stands alone from the Lord of the Rings and yet is in my opinion crucial to set up and create the background for the Lord of the Rings.
In summary; you will love this book all by itself with all it's orcs, dwarves, elves, dragon, wizard, hobbits and more. But perhaps you will take even more from it if you already have an appreciation for the Lord of the Rings. You will not be disapointed with this book wheather in hardback or in softcover.
Of all the dragon tales this one is my favorite (Anne McCaffrey included). For just a moment forget what you know of Middle Earth and the Third Age of Men. Forget the Fall of Numenor and the tales of the West. Forget Dark Lords, Rings of Power and the race of forgotten kings. This story is merely incidental to the Lord of the Rings. This story stands on its own as a great adventure epic. The resurfacing of the Ring of Power is a mere footnote in this epic treasure quest. Meet the Dwarves and journey on a greedy theives errend to plunder gold from Smaug, the last of his kind.
I've known Bilbo and those of Middle Earth since my first read in the late 60's and more in the early 70's. I wanted to own a hardcover edition and so won this on ebay.
Although much simple a read, being a children's story when written, than "Lord of the Rings" "the Hobbit" is a very good introduction to Middle Earth and a most excellent story.
Belief of the story at any level needs to be left to the individual. I've read all four books (five actually counting the "Symarilion"- sure I butchered that) each time they called to me from a drawer or shelf and continue to learn more at each reading.
It is grounding - centering back onto one's foundation - thing for me.
I suggest everyone should try to read these.
