For those who may not know, His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) is one of the best shoujo romantic series ever created. Its production was helmed by the legendary studio Gainax (Evangelion, Nadia, Gurren Lagann, FLCL, Gunbuster), which means that it has no choice but to be among the greatest anime series ever created.
In short, the story is about the joys, trials and tribulations of Yukino Miyazawa and Souichirou Arima. They are both two very different people when they meet and as time goes on, both start to change and promise to become their real selves to each other. There is also a large supporting cast of other memorable characters such as Miyazawa's family and their friends at school.
This show has something for everyone. It's hilarious as well as very emotional at times. Every character in this show has gone through some type of emotional hardship in their past, which makes for an even more pleasant experience when they overcome and confront these obstacles.
Anyway, I would reccomend this show to anyone who wants to watch something a bit different from the norm in their anime. While the animation quality isn't top-notch, there are many experimental animation techniques that make this an enjoyable show to watch. The dub is great and if you watch it in english, then I highly reccomend that you watch it in the "sub 2" option. That way all of the signs and on-screen text will be translated (there are a ton of on-screen symbols and text that you will need to have translated in order to understand what goes on during each episode, otherwise you will be lost). This is an excellent show that is well deserving of its classic status and one that I would reccomend to any anime fan.
You won't find any giant robots here or any powerful wizards but rather a romantic comedy revolving around two high school students. Hideaki Anno (former director of Neon Genesis Evangelion) offers a shoujo-comedy show that is very addicting and appealing to all audiences, mainly females. The story behind His and Her Circumstances could probably seem more real than anything you could witness within a hundred anime series you could watch. There is so much to this show on several levels, it would simply take too long to describe everything in this single paragraph. Simply brillant.
From the theme music, altered many ways throughout the series, to the very human emotions, very humorous family incidents and the contemplative moods, this is the one to make a part of your life. Time is allowed for you to let the feelings and new thoughts sink in, and you realize things you never noticed when you were growing up. I have seen many kinds of Anime, but this has a real heart. It can make an old man, hardened from life's troubles, laugh and cry. It brings you back to the very moments you first held hands, or kissed in school. It is wonderful at teaching how to think of new emotions and feelings about others. It expresses various responses to painful circumstances, and joy. Life can turn in a moment, and the emptiness will be filled. You enter high school with a neat little plan for your life, but ...
A lifetime of hard study can lose its grip when the mind begins to notice a new sensation taking over -- a sense of being helpless when you are apart from one you first considered the enemy. As time goes on small surprises change you, and your heart is bound to this other person. Even before you know it, your life has changed, and keeping them in your life is worth everything.
And again the music. I am a classical music fan, and this haunting piece of the violin and other instruments, in various moods at various times, keeps running through my mind when I am in need of it. If you want to amuse yourself with memories of sibling rivalry, recall what looked to you like a total lack of family harmony, remember the fear you had when you first realized you might be falling in love, then get this 5 volume series. Watch it with your parents or your kids. It is the most special.
I have been watching His and Her Circumstances on TV for weeks. I could not take the idea that I would have to wait 15 more weeks to see the ending so I ordered the box set. Its a fun smart smart series but I have to say Im a little sad with the ending, but not so much that it wrecked the whole thing. Its worth watching for the great anime and storyline.
I saw the first episode of His and Her Circumstances and instantly became an addict! XD it is simply amazing one of the best and cutest show I have ever seen. It is also one of the only anime in which I prefer the english voice actors over the original japanese voice actors and that is saying a lot. Most animes are killed off when the english voice actors slaughter their lines but this one is actually better! It is a very deep show!
My only regret is that the anime has ended.... :(
