Product description

Synopsis
At the outset of the civil rights movement in Jackson, Mississippi, three unique women unite to share the stories of dozens of the city's black servants, who have been kept voiceless for too long. Skeeter is fresh home from college, with big dreams of becoming a journalist, though her mother just wants her to find a husband. Aibileen, a black maid, is the heart and soul of her household, now working on raising her seventeenth white child. Her best friend Minnie, is the best cook in the city, but can not find a job because of her tendency to speak the cold truth. Together, these three unforgettable ladies launch a crusade to collect the stories of the town's silent servants, and try to tear down the unspoken racial barriers that traverse the homes and hearts of everyone in Jackson.

Industry Reviews
"Kathryn Stockett['s]...first novel is a nuanced variation on the theme that strikes every note with authenticity. In a page-turner that brings new resonance to the moral issues involved, she spins a story of social awakening as seen from both sides of the American racial divide."
(04/01/2009)

"[THE HELP] is graceful and real, a compulsively readable story of three women who watch the Mississippi ground shifting beneath their feet as the words of men like Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Dylan pervade their genteel town."
(02/20/2009)

The Help

I grew up and still live in the Jackson, MS area. Recognize names, streets and remember lots of the events that occurred during the time period that the book is about. I travel frequently and loved having this entertaining book to listen to. Several times I had to just park and sit so I could continue listening. Couldn't wait to get in my car to and from work each day. Laughed and cried at the stories, memories and injustices that were done to many of the ladies that raised a lot of the children in homes with "help". Thank God the ignorance of that age has improved in most people of the south and all over America.(didn't occur only in Mississippi and is not restricted just to people in the south)Our world still has a long way to go in improving race relations, but things have come a long way since the days the book was written about.

This is the only audio tape that I just couldn't put down! It had just enough historical information about civil rights to make the relationships relative. It is a book about a white woman writing a book about how the black maids related to and thought of the white people they worked for. The attitudes of these white households toward not only their help but each other. It showed how one person in the community could influence others to the extent of putting social status and employment in jeopardy. I'm not a book reviewer, I just know that this held my interest and I recommend it to all!

I took this book on vacation and could not put it down. It stays with you for a long time and prompts alot of discussion among friends from both the north and the south. Being domestic "help" is so unique in that it puts both parties in such intimate contact revealing every small detail about the employer's family situation. I cannot think of another job that does that. Its a fun yet moving book.

Best book of the year! Circa 1965 in the South from the "help's" point of view. Sad, moving, amazing and sometimes hard- to- believe- funny at what the African American women saw and endured as they waited on the privileged white women. Should be required reading in high school. JB, Elgin, Illinois
