Movie synopsis
British director John Duigan (WIDE SARGASSO SEA, FLIRTING, SIRENS) takes on epic grandeur with HEAD IN THE CLOUDS, a relentless tale of love and romance, war and high society, personal sacrifice and the greater good. Charlize Theron, fresh off her Oscar for MONSTER, stars as the very rich and free-spirited Gilda, a beautiful blonde socialite who enjoys parties, champagne, and sex. However, she gets a little more serious upon meeting Guy (Stuart Townsend), an Irishman studying at Cambridge who believes that he must join the fight in the Spanish Civil War. Penelope Cruz plays Mia, Gilda's Spanish protegee who had to give up her dancing career because of a bad leg and now is studying to become a nurse. As Guy and Mia consider going to Spain, Gilda takes their possible leaving personally, casting them aside as she pursues other interests that turn out to be far more dangerous than anyone could have imagined. Duigan's film focuses on a fascinating section of society from the 1920s through the end of World War II, as the fancy living of the Roaring Twenties became a memory with the coming of the Great Depression and, ultimately, World War II. Theron is excellent as a modern woman with liberal ideas--but only when it comes to herself and her own situation. Moving primarily between Paris, London, and Spain, HEAD IN THE CLOUDS is a remarkable journey through one of the most diverse and difficult periods of the 20th century, when the future of the world hung in the balance.

Head in the Clouds (DVD, 2005

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS is a sweeping romantic drama set in 1930's England, Paris, and Spain. Gilda Bessé shares her Paris apartment with an Irish schoolteacher, Guy Malyon, and Mia, a refugee from Spain. As the world drifts toward war, Gilda defiantly pursues her hedonistic lifestyle and her burgeoning career as a photographer. But Guy and Mia feel impelled to join the fight against fascism, and the three friends are separated - seemingly forever.

Great movie........

Head in the Clouds

One of my favorite movies of all time. Charlize Theron and her real-life partner, Stuart Townsend, give Oscar quality performances in this love story/drama/war story. Spanish actress Penelope Cruz is the third character in the story. An intriguing tale of three people whose lives come together, then go their seperate ways...for a while. I don't want to give away more of the story, but for fans of Charlize Theron, this is the movie to see. She is at her best, and lovliness. A must see!

Head in the Clouds (DVD, 2005)

I liked this movie very much. Hearing Gilda bang her man of the moment through the paper-thin Parisian walls sends a frustrated Guy running back home to Britain, but before he leaves, he meets her friend Mia (Penelope Cruz), a gimpy model who dreams of returning to her native Spain and serving as a nurse in the ongoing conflict. This synopsis is getting unnecessarily long, so I'll try to fast-forward through the rest. Guy and Gilda meet up yet again, they set up shop in Paris, and, with Mia in tow, they spend a blissfully happy year together. Mia and Guy continue to feel obligated to contribute what they can to the effort in Spain, and eventually they stop talking about it and actually leave. Gilda feels betrayed, unable to understand why they'd abandon happiness in favor of near-certain death.

excellent, brutally serious

Anything of substance said here would be a spoiler.

The writing is excellent, the tech work is excellent, the acting is excellent, and the story is more than excellent, but brutal and ugly, too-- honestly brutal, making this well worth owning.

If you are looking for happy and feel good, avoidthisone.
