Movie synopsis
Academy Award nominee Daniel Barber (THE TONTO WOMAN) makes his feature directorial debut with this gritty critique on contemporary British society starring Michael Caine as an elderly shut-in who's spurred to action by a senseless act of violence. Harry Brown (Caine) resides in a desolate public-housing apartment block as his sickly wife lies dying in a local hospital. He spends most of his days in solitude, only getting out to play the occasional game of chess at a nearby pub with his best friend, Leonard (David Bradley). The days of basic human decency seem to be a thing of the past, because in recent years barbarous drug dealers and gangsters have overtaken the dilapidated complex. Killing is a way of life for these young thugs, and as a result overburdened detectives Frampton (Emily Mortimer) and Hicock (Charlie Creed-Miles) are essentially relegated to knocking on doors and notifying parents when their children have been killed in the latest fracas, instead of investigating the crimes and jailing the guilty parties. When Leonard is murdered just feet from his own apartment, former Royal Marine Harry utilizes the skills he learned while fighting the IRA to take on the aggressive chavs who have intimidated the police into inaction.

Editorial reviews

"Like smokestack soot, revenge colors HARRY BROWN, the smartly done socio-economic killer thriller that has Michael Caine at 77 armed and dangerous..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (04/28/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Michael Caine as the title character is no pale imitation of other iconic law-abiding men. He's quietly mad as hell and raises the level of the film with his grave intelligence and contained ferocity."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (04/28/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "HARRY BROWN is a revenge thriller poised somewhere between DEATH WISH and GRAN TORINO....Caine is a subtle actor who builds characters from the inside out."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (04/28/2010)

4 stars out of 5 -- "An old-fashioned vigilante revenge drama burnished with art film sensibilities and a classicist's attention to detail, HARRY BROWN is a triumph of both technique and substance."
Box Office - Wade Major (04/30/2010)

"[I]t features an Expressionistic palette and steady, even stolid, camerawork and precise framing, which first complement Harry's routinized life and then underscore his resolve."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (04/30/2010)

Michael Caine scores another hit

Michael Caine stars as Harry Brown, an elderly shut-in who's wife is dying and finds that his apartment complex has been taken over by drug dealers and gangsters. Murders seem to be a daily happening and when Harry gets tired of the lack of response from the local police he decides to take matters into his own hands and take back the complex.

Michael Caine is a great actor and this role is perfect for him. He is sensitive in all the right moments and ruthless when he needs to be. The movie is above average in entertainment and suspense.

The movie also stars: David Bradley, Emily Mortimer, and Charlie Creed-Miles

If you love a good action movie then I highly recommend that you get this movie, you will be glad you did.

A literate, British version of "Deathwish"!

What makes this film worth watching is Michael Caine's multi-layered performance. Here, he is a retired pensioner living in a sleazy, run-down London housing project overrun with crime and drug dealers. His wife is dying of cancer, and his only friend, Len, is set upon and murdered. The police seem powerless, and Caine with his military background is forced by circumstances to respond. This is not like Michael Winner's Deathwish with Charles Bronson methodically killing criminals for sheer pleasure. Here, we see Caine's anguish as he does what has to be done. With excellent support from Emily Mortimar and David Bradley, you have a slow, dark believeable film. Unlike real life where revenge leaves loose ends, all things are resolved by the end. This film has a tag line like Clint Eastwood's "Make my day!". When Harry confronts a drug dealer whose gun misfires, he states "you have to maintain your weapon, Sir!" and then dispatches him so he won't be around for a sequel.

Dark, Typical English Drama

This was the English version of Eastwoods Gran Torino without the car and without the rich storyline. Dark, moody and soo slowww! Its worth having if you're a Michael Caine fan-he is such a great actor. Otherwise the character development is boring. The female police Lt. is a sad excuse for a woman. The film needed more characters we could care about and less over the top disgusting druggies.

Marine

they're both combat veterans (Harry is a Marine who served in an unspecified conflict, Caine served in the British Army during the Korean war), and Caine lived in the same area that Brown does.

I was glad I didn't go out to see it, but it was good for an evening in.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I bought this movie because I am a fan of Micheal Caine.

I thought the plot to be equal parts of Gran Torino and Death Wish mixed together then transplanted into the UK. I enjoyed the movie, but it was a bit transparent.

In my humble opinion, the scene in which Harry is discussing the various chess pieces with the detective inspector should not have been cut.
