Movie synopsis
Sugar Ray (Richard Pryor) became Quick's (Eddie Murphy) adopted father when an adolescent Quick saved his life. More than two decades later, in 1938, Ray runs the most popular club in Harlem, with Quick as his right hand man. Before long, Bugsy, a white mobster (Michael Lerner) comes knocking for a piece of the club's action in the form of weekly protection money, with a crooked cop (Danny Aiello) as the muscle and a dangerous woman (Jasmine Guy) as the bait. But by fixing a big boxing match, Ray and Quick just may be able to thwart Bugsy's plan and make off with a wad of his cash in the process. Murphy wrote and directed.

~*~*~ A GOOD COMEDY!!! TOP NAME ACTORS!! 7.5/10~*~*~

Review For: Harlem Nights (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

A GOOD COMEDY with three generations of comedy Legends: Redd Foxx(Sanford & Son), Richard Pryor, and Eddie Murphy. A film about a couple wealthy club owners, corrupt police, and an agressive Mobster. There are many hilarious scenes in this film.

This is the ReMastered version of the original 1989 Classic Film.

Also starring in this film are: Della Reese , Arsenio Hall , Jasmine Guy , and Danny Aiello

RENT IT or BUY IT? We would say it would be a good purchase. Its not one of those movies you'll enjoy watching everyday, but it may be one you would want to own to watch whenever.

OUR RATING: 7.0-7.5/10

Classic laughs from an All Star cast! Truly a classic!!

Review For: Harlem Nights (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

Harlem Nights is one of those films, that once watched ends up in your DVD library. It's also one of those films you will re-buy as often as necessary to ensure you always have a watchable copy. The amazing cast delivers the broad spectrum of comedy, from raucous and raunchy, sometimes slapstick, to wonderfully edgy and sarcastic.
Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor team up with Della Reese and Red Foxx and in doing so marry decades of comedic brilliance. The sets and costumes are simply stunning- a visual orchestral- bringing to life a bygone era full of decadence and flamboyance in fine exaggerated Hollywood style. The acting, while not Oscar worthy, is certainly believable and not over-done. In short the movie is engrossing and fun.
The language is, more often than not, rough,... the subject matter inappropriate for anyone under the age of 18,... and there is more than a films fair share of violence from beginning to end,... but this is to be expected from this team of comic masterminds. So put those fragile sensitivities to bed, grab your favorite cocktail and enjoy an adult evening of meaningless humor (no complicated messages or cryptic meanings here). When the movie is over you will have laughed through two hours of your life,... and right now,... I can't think of a thing I would rather spend two hours doing,... can you?

Harlem Nights (DVD, 2002)

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: Harlem Nights (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

In Harlem, New York, 1918, Sugar Ray (Richard Pryor) has a dice game going in the back of his candy store. Many of his friends and associates are present, including his old friend Bennie (Redd Foxx). After nearly being killed by an angry man who lost money, Ray is saved when an 8-year-old errand boy shoots the man in the head. The orphan, who goes by the name "Quick," becomes the "good luck charm" for Ray, who raises him.

Twenty years later (1938), Ray and a grown-up Quick (Eddie Murphy) now run a highly successful nightclub called "Club Sugar Ray", a speakeasy with a brothel in back run by tough-talking madam Vera (Della Reese).

The problem is, that Sugar Ray's has run afowl of a gangster named Bugsy Calhoun (Michael Lerner) who owns several competitive clubs. He has a police detective on his payroll that he sends to "Lean" on Ray and Quick. He also sends his "Club Pitty Pat" manager, Tommy Smalls (Thomas Mikal Ford) and his Creole mistress Dominique LaRue (Jasmine Guy), to check-out "Club Sugar Ray's". When Calhoun makes it pretty obvious that if they don't shut down or sell out to him, he will kill them, Ray and Quick devise a plan to get out, but only after making one last big score. That score involves making a killing on an upcoming Championship Heavy-Weight prize fight.

Calhoun tries to get Quick to come work for him and run the Pitty-Pat Club, but Quick suspects a set-up and refuses. Afterwards, Dominique attempts to lure Quick to her home to kill him, but he turns the tables on her and shoots her. Tommy Smalls is stealing from Calhoun, and Calhoun sends his crooked cop, Phil Cantone (Danny Aiello), to kill him. Smalls' brother (Arsenio Hall) finds Tommy dead, and thinks Quick killed him. He and his gang go after Quick, and in a funny scene, Quick shoots all of them with just a pistol, even though they all have machine guns. Now, Sugar, Quick, Bennie, and Vera all make their plans for leaving.

The current boxing champ, Jack Jenkins (Stan Shaw), is a tongue-tied black guy who is a friend of Sugar and Quick. Cantone makes fun of him for stuttering, so he too wants revenge. Together they make it look like Ray is paying Jenkins to throw the fight. Everybody knows that Jenkins is going to kill the challenger, Kirkpatrick, so when Ray's people bet half a million dollars on Kirkpatrick, Calhoun and Cantone figure that the "fix" is in. Ray, and Quick didn't fix the fight, they simply plan to rip-off Calhoun's "bag man" after he collects all of the bets.

The plan is to have one of Vera's girls, "Sunshine", seduce the bag man Richie Vinto, who deeply falls in love with her. She convinces him that she loves him and he is ready to leave his wife and family for her. She confesses to him that she is a numbers runner, and he agrees to pick her up after the fight, because she is afraid of being on the streets all alone. The plan is to cause a traffic accident with Vento's car, and dressed like New York City cops, grab all of the money from his trunk. They get the money, and leave a bag full of sugar in its place.

When Vento gets to Calhoun's home with the wrong bag, and he finds the sugar, Calhoun is furious. At the same time, Vera shows up at Calhoun's house and tells him that Sugar Ray and Quick stole his money and that they were all at Ray's home. Calhoun and his men rush to Ray's home where a booby-trapped bomb blows the place up killing Calhoun and his men. Ray, Bennie, Quick and Vera leave Harlem in a Rolls-Royce full of money.

Stylish & Clevor

Review For: Harlem Nights (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

There is not one thing to dislike about this movie. It's funny, well directed and it stars some of the greatest comedians, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy and most of all the Ms. Della Reese. Good movie to watch.

A Very Funny Movie!

Review For: Harlem Nights (DVD, 2002, Widescreen)

Though I'm admittedly not a big Eddie Murphy fan, this film features some truly great actors/comdedians, all of who have been named in other reviews. Most enjoyable of all for me was the coarse-talking character played by Della Reese... Red Foxx and Richard Pryor are also hilarious in this movie. The plot being set mostly in the 1930's, the costumes and clothes are interesting as well. I highly recommend this film to lovers of comedy.
