Movie synopsis
Acclaimed director Franco Zeffirelli teamed with Mel Gibson for this energetic, earthy adaptation of the classic Shakespeare tragedy. From study abroad, the young Prince of Denmark returns home to find his mother has married his uncle, and his father's ghost is urging him to action; but what action? Gibson brings real gusto to Hamlet's anguish, and makes this full-blooded translation roar with life. Glenn Close, as his mother, and Helena Bonham Carter, as Ophelia, both lend excellent support. This is Shakespeare with teeth; it should please both students and casual filmgoers.

Editorial reviews

"...Both leads stand up honourably, with some solid, unshowy acting, to a cluster of high-caliber British Shakespeareans..."
Sight and Sound - Jonathan Romney (05/01/1991)

"...Given how intellectually the role is usually played, Gibson's portrayal is personal and original..." -- 3 1/2 out of 4 stars
USA Today - David Patrick Stearns (12/19/1990)

"...Fluid and atmospheric....Gibson is a serious and compelling Hamlet for today..."
New York Times - Caryn James (12/19/1990)

"...It's exquisitely designed, by Dante Ferretti, and lushly photographed....Gibson shows Shakespearean tools: princely bearing, a resonant and supple voice for verse....He is a creditable Hamlet..."
Sight and Sound - Michael Wilmington (01/18/1991)

4 stars out of 5 -- "It proves one of Gibson's best performances, vibrant, crazed, capturing a sense of emotion running riot that the Royal Shakespeare Company tends to damp down."
Empire - Ian Freer (02/01/2009)

Mel Gibson Hamlet DVD

Review For: Hamlet (DVD, 2004)

I chose the Mel Gibson Hamlet DVD because I knew my college students would be able to relate to a contemporary star, so that would make Shakespeare's most famous play more accessible. Gibson gives a passionate portrayal of the Prince of Denmark. The scenery, music, and actors all make this play come alive.

Since the four-hour play was reduced to two hours, of course, some of the scenes were either deleted or left out, but all in all, this was a great presentation. The DVD itself is good because, as with most DVDs, there are all those great "extras," for example, Gibson himself discussing his role as Hamlet.

I highly recommend this DVD to all interested parties. I am thrilled to say that after most of my students actually read Shakespeare's play, they could actively enjoy the Hollywood version. Gibson should have won an Oscar for this one. Anyone who wants to view the most-performed play of all ages should purchase this DVD. Become more cultured!

Hamlet (DVD, 2004)

Review For: Hamlet (DVD, 2004)

This my favorite Hamlet just because it is over the top and vivid like all Zeferelli productions. This is Mel Gibson at his best although he is certainly not the ideal Shakespearian actor. He is, in real life, a Hamlet-like character. This comes out in his interpretation of Hamlet. The people around him (Glen Close, Ian Holm, Alan Bates, Paul Scofield) are giants in their field and Helena Bonham Carter is perfect for her part. The production values and authenticity are equal to any period piece I have ever seen. Let the critics thumb their ivory noses, this is lush, gritty and wonderful. The Bard of Avon would love it.

To sleep, perchance to dream.

Review For: Hamlet (DVD, 2004)

This is when I first started taking Mel Gibson serious as an actor. Tremendous job, with intense almost sexual energy between he and Glenn Close. My biggest disappointment was the wooden acting of Helena Bonham-Carter, what a waste of the part of Ophelia!

Excellent Experience

Review For: Hamlet (DVD, 2004)

Great movie! received it extremely fast. An excellent production to get an idea of one of the many perceptions on Shakespeare's Hamlet. Mel Gibson does a fantastic job depicting the sexual freudian tensions depicted in the play.

Grabs you from the first scene, I didn't want it to end

Review For: Hamlet (DVD, 2004)

Great film! It got here just in time for my neice's birthday. Mel Gibson plays a great role, first as his father dies, then his sister commits suicide. The queen (Glenn Close)is very evil and tries to trick Hamlet into sleeping with her. I love midevil type movies. All of the characters in Hamlet were dressed for their roles and they all had mid-England voices yet I could certainly understand everyone. Great movie, a must see!
