Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

The HP TouchPad uses Palm's unique WebOS interface and delivers Adobe Flash-enabled Web browsing, Beats audio enhancement, and impressive compatibility with third-party calendar, messaging, and e-mail services.

  • THE BAD

The TouchPad has a thick, smudgy design, offers no rear camera or HD video capture, includes a limited app selection, and its unique cards system of multitasking isn't as fully utilized as it could be.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The TouchPad would have made a great competitor for the original iPad, but its design, features, and speed put it behind today's crop of tablet heavyweights.

For $99, this device does it all.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: HP TouchPad 16GB, Wi-Fi, 9.7in - Glossy Black

Got this TouchPad for a pretty good price. Started using it, and it feels nice to sway away from iOS just a bit. As soon as it passed the first boot, it was a little sluggish, but after about a minute it sped up. The entire thing runs really smoothly and fast, and is great for surfing the web. Speakers are unreal! I played some of my favorite tunes, and the Beats Audio makes them sound better than an iPad's speaker. It is quite loud, most notably because the device has two speaker grilles. For $99 (off HP's site), this device is well worth the money. App selection has yet to seek a little more improvement (now that everyone has one, there will be more devs and more apps).

The one thing I really really dislike is the interaction with YouTube videos. It is so frickin hard to rewind or skip to a certain time in a video. The TouchPad has a hard time deciding whether I want to scroll through the page or through the video. It plays the videos smoothly, but the interaction with the video player has some room for improvement.

I still have to check out the many of HP's stock apps and try them out. But as of now, I have a very good impression of the device, and I don't think it will leave my hands.

Nice portable, functional, and great looking device and iPad alternative.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Terrific device that works better than expected. The visuals are great for pictures and the Internet. One can create several accounts for email, social networking, and photo storage. It also has a nice apps store which should expand. Storage capacity can be expanded by getting a free 50gb Boxes account. the only drawbacks for me are difficulties accessing the files system and playing videos located on the device and attracting smudges. It plays Youtube, Dailymotion, and demo videos very well, however, I cannot locate the vidwos I uploaded to the device for play. The glossy finish attracts fingerprints, but does clean-up well witht he included cleaning cloth.

I bought it because it was inexpensive and not an Android, Windows or Mac. I love it's size and was able to type on it very easily. The office program included is limited in creation options, but it does work with Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and PDFs. Do not plan to do major editing though. I did have trouble downloading documents from the web, but was able to transfer them from another computer and they worked. WebOS looks promising and can pair with Palm to make phone calls. However, I have Android and RIM, but I understand the limitation.

I am satisfied with this product and look forward to using it more in the future.

This product is very well made and works as described. I love it.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The touchpad is a very useful device. The screen is very high quality for touch response and picture quality. I believe it is the same or very similar to the iPad 2 screen. The email client is very nice. The card system for running programs or websites is a nice feature as well. I've had a couple hiccups with using Skype video calls from my touchpad to an iPad 2. Mainly, every once in a while the video goes out but sound still works. Not sure why that is happening but I haven't tested it out much more than that. The app store is limited, however if you want this tablet to use the internet, email, watch videos and do basic document editing or writing, you don't need to worry about the lack of apps. I personally don't use my tablet for gaming since I have an Xbox and ps3 at home. This table it is very well made and if you scored it for $99-150 during the firewall, you got a hell of a bargain. Its worth much more. I'd say it is worth around $350-$400. I wrote this review from the touchpad.

A Great Deal!!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: HP TouchPad 16GB, Wi-Fi, 9.7in - Glossy Black

Pros: Cheap Price, Great OS, Flash
Cons: Needs More Apps, Uncertain Future (but, given how quickly technology become obsolete, who cares, even an iPad 2 will be obsolete in less than a year)

I bought the touchpad because I'm a fan of WebOS, and because of the cheap price. Even If you buy it at the current ebay market price of around $220, you're still getting a good deal compared the the price of other tablets.

I've used both iPads and Android based tablets, and I have to say the HP touchpad, in terms of usability of the OS, blows both out of the water. I did have some issues using it before I updated to 3.02, so if you have problems definitely upgrade and also install preware patches.

They way webOS handles all of your email and facebook/yahoo accounts is great. All of my accounts and contact information are integrated and, unlike an iOS device, there is googlechat. There is no Skype app, because it is seamlessly integrated into the operating system.

ANother nice thing is you can watch Hulu, or any website that uses flash. Hulu.com was recently blocked on the touchpad. You can easily hack it to work using preware.

Excellent tablet, well worth the money spent!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is actually a great tablet, despite all the bad reviews and listing it as a total flop and a epic failure. WebOS is a great operating system, I have nothing but good things to say about it. I actually bought several broken ones to fix and bought a pristine 64GB too. I bought these specifically to install Android, not that webos is bad I just don't think it's being actively supported and developed even though it's now open source and app selection is very limited. I use the tablet on a daily basis using Android Ice Cream Sandwich. I honestly think it beats the hell out of the iPad and yes I do own a iPad 2. The sound from the tablet is amazing! I would highly recommend this tablet to anyone, well worth the money spent!
