Average review score based on 20 user reviews
My prior PDA was a Sony Clie SJ22.
I decided to upgrade to enjoy MP3 audio, Video and wireless networking.
I chose to switch to Pocket PC (over Palm) because I've heard that Palm is on its way out and I figured that the problems with earlier MS Windows based PDAs had been mostly overcome. So, I took the plunge.
Before buying the HX2495 I read dozens of reviews and the theme that was constant was that this model was "as good as it gets."
Having used it for just over a month I can report that MS based PDAs still have quirks. Lots of lock-up and reboot when just running MS apps. Poor power switch behavior - doesn't always turn on without a reset. Even at 525mhz, switching apps is sluggish.
HP has been wounderful to deal with. Very responsive and helpful. Great company.
I used to hate Palm's HotSync, now I miss it. Microsoft's ActiveSync is a really nasty by comparison and relies on Outlook 2003 Dlls for much of its functionality. I'm tempted to see if life is better with a serial connection rather than a USB connection??
Overall the X2495 s a nice machine. I'm happy I didn't buy into an older platform. Battery life is great unless you accidentally leave it on (which is easy to do).
I'd probably buy this machine again if faced with the same criteria.

I love the protective flip down cover that protects the screen from scratches. It can be removed if it gets in the way when flipped up. The unit is fast and has the capacity for two expansion cards but be advised that it will not recognize anything larger than 2gb each. Battery life is very good too. The network connections make connecting to the internet easy. Overall, a very good older pda. Mine came with mobile windows 5.0.
The iPaq 2495 that I bought, what? a month ago? was superb until today. Now, nothing I do seems to bring it back to life. I presume corrosion in internal connections, but there's no way of knowing.
It seemed to have this problem a week or so ago, for brief periods. That is, it would lose battery power, then restart and be OK. For the last two weeks, no problem. Now, I can remove the battery, replace it, and push the cold reset. It will then begin reset, and the progress bar will move, oh, 1/2 inch. Then the first blink (if it's charging) of the charge light, and it immediately goes black.
Some failed component in the power supply.
I am at this moment downloading the API for the iPhone, and buying an iPod Touch.
Goodbye to a wonderful friend, the iPaq, of which this brief replacement was the last of a long line of HP pdas. The previous one lasted 4 years, but it was bought new. There are no more new ones to be had.
I have been really disappointed with this purchase. I had a Palm device for so long and it finally gave out. This is my first Pocket PC device. It is hard to determine if the item is actually turned off or not. Pushing the power button quickly just seems to darken the screen. Pushing and holding down the button just turns out the back-light but leaves the item on. As a result, unless the item is in the charger every night, it is dead by the next morning. It feels like I end up spending more time charging the item that actually using it. The software for it pales in comparison to Palm software. I already can't wait until this one dies...and when it does....I'm buying a Palm!! This item hasn't come anyway near my expectations.
