Movie synopsis
This stellar Broadway play from Arthur Laurent, Jule Styne, and Stephen Sondheim ranks as one of the great pieces of American musical theater. The play and the subsequent film feature the enormously popular "Everything Is Coming Up Roses" and also includes "Small World," "All I Need Is the Girl," "You Gotta Have a Gimmick," "Let Me Entertain You," "Broadway, Broadway," and a half dozen others. The story follows the life of Rose Louise Hovick, the infamous queen of burlesque. Mama Rose, played by Rosalind Russell, propelled by the fame she never achieved, is determined to make her two daughters vaudeville stars whether they like it or not. Her bets rest with the older daughter, June, until June strikes off on her own, putting all the pressure on Louise (Natalie Wood), who isn't particularly interested in her mother's aspirations. At the same time, the world of vaudeville is decaying slowly around them, with many of the stages turning to burlesque acts. In a spontaneous move, Louise creates her own strip show onstage, and even though Louise doesn't display any skin, the act catches on fire. Actresses Russell and Wood pull off the difficult dramatic roles, but the real charm of the film rests in the excellent soundtrack.

THIS IS A GREAT MUSICAL,IT HAS COMEDY,AND DRAMA. NATALIE WOODS AND ROSALIND RUSSELL AND OTHERS PLAY IN THIS GREAT MOVIE.IT,S ABOUT A FAMILY THAT GOES INTO SHOW BIZ AND THEIR MOTHER KEEPS PUSHING THEM TO DO MORE AND KEEPS THEM WORKING HARDER TO BE A STAR,AS SHE ONCE WANTED TO BE,THAT WAS HER DREAM BUT SHE NEVER WENT FOR IT AND WORKED HARD ENOUGH,SO SHE BECAME THE KIDS MANGER(ROSALIND PLAYS THE MOTHER.THEY GO FROM TOWN TO TOWN PLAYING IN ALL KINDS OF RAT HOLES AND WORK THEIR WAY UP.NATALIE PLAYS HER DAUGHTER.AS SHE GROWS OLDER SHE WANTS TO DO ACTS ON HER OWN.FINALLY AFTER THE LITTLEST GIRL LEAVES,ROSALIND STARTS TO NOTICE HER DAUGHTER NATALIE HAS AN ACT FOR SHOW BIZ,SO SHE HELPS HER.BUT NATALIE START TO REALLY GROW UP AND SHE STARTS A NEW ACT THAT SHE FALLS INTO BECAUSE OF HER MOTHER,AND STARTS TO REALLY LIKE IT.SHE HAS A NAME FOR HERSELF AND BY THIS TIME HER MOTHER THINKS SHE'S NO HELP ANY MORE FOR HER. NATALIE SHOWS HER MOM HOW GREATFUL SHE IS FOR BEING THERE AND PUSHING HER TO FAME. NATALIE BECOMES A RICH AND WELL KNOWN ENTERTAINING STRIPPER. I THINK THIS MOVIE IS A CLASSIC I LOVED IT, VERY CLASSY,AND IT HAD ALOT OF COMEDY IN IT, EVEN THE SONGS! I DIDN,T LIKE THE WIDESCREEN VERSION. BUT IT'S A GREAT MOVIE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE, IT'S A CLASSIC. (PEACE)!! :~)

GYPSY - w/Rosalind Russell & Natalie Wood

Review For: Gypsy (DVD, 2000)

The best thing about this DVD is that it preserves the wonderful "Musical Fable" GYPSY. Although some liberties were taken when the quintessential best musical of all times reached Hollywood, the integrity of the production remains solid. A brilliant score by Jule Styne & Steven Sondheim, along with the perfect book by Arthur Laurents makes GYPSY the "Show of Shows" always and forever. If you missed seeing the original Broadway production starring ETHEL MERMAN (for whom the show was written), or the close-to-the-original 2008 revival starring PATTI LUPONE, this film version will bring you the basic elements of the stage production. Superb performances by Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood, along with great costumes and choreography, are captured on film forever. This is a don't-miss entertainment delight!!! No melodramatic tripe here, just pure ENTERTAINMENT captured on film forever.

CLASSIC MUSICAL STARRING NATALIE WOOD AS GYPSY!

Review For: Gypsy (DVD, 2000)

This classic film is the musical adaption of Gypsy Rose Lee's autobiography. Natalie Wood shines in the starring role. Rosalind Russell belts it out of the park as Mama Rose, the original stage mother! The score and dance choreography are tops.

Gypsy

Review For: Gypsy (DVD, 2000)

This movie to my wife and I is considered a classic! It has great actors and actresses! Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden are great. It portrays Gypsy Rose Lee in a very true and positive setting as she went through Vaudeville and became famous as a sophisticated stripper. It has good musicals as well acting. Positively recommended!
Sorry, I have not seen the newer version so I cannot compare the two together.

Everything's NOT Coming Up Roses

Review For: Gypsy (DVD, 2000)

I bought this because I know Faith Dane (Mazeppa, the stripper with the bugle). Otherwise, I'd've given it a miss. Rosalind Russell is miscast as Mama Rose, Natalie Wood didn't do her own singing, and the whole thing drags. There are better versions to see and hear. Bette Midler did a much better job portraying Mama Rose as the monster-stage mother of all time in her TV version, and even if she misses the subtleties, Ethel Merman's original blast (yes) recording is still the definitive.
