This is a very good example of how, when a film comes together, has all of the right elements: cast, director, story line, facts and shows in the widescreen version which allows you the experience of a German WII prison camp framed against the heroic efforts of the inmates, it is always watchable -- it does not matter how old the product.
This is one of my husband's favorite films. This was a time when America supported her military personnel and were not afraid to show it. It does not preach patriotism, it shows it and the coperation of the allied forces. It is probably what you could call a man's flick but I do not mind watching it either.
The movie is based on a true incidents and there is a lot of pain in watching the torture unfold, knowing that real people suffered real horror, but there is laughter too, which breaks up the tension.
The cast has been well choosen and it helps to know the McQueen did his own motorcycle stunts. I was thrilled to find it and we would recommend it to everyone.
Classic World War II POW film which was filmed in Bavaria, Germany. Steve McQueen is at the top of his game.....cast of stars...just a wonderful film!!!
Realistic...great re-enactment, filming is perfect. Watch this one!!!
Well if you love World War 2 movies than your collection is not complete without The Great Escape! This movie features great actors including: Steve McQueen, James Garner and others. While not action driven like most WW2 movies, this movie is driven by storyline, plot and characters! Plus it is based off of a true story. If you are a WW2 movie fan you must have this flick!
The motion picture is a classic and it is beautifully preserved on this DVD. I am a WWII buff and enjoy movies depicting real history about the war. For the most part, this movie lives up to the realism and drama. There is a little Hollywood theatrics with some of the chase scenes but the movie really captures the essence of what the Great Escape was all about.
This is the collector's edition that includes an extra DVD. This DVD has a very interesting set of featurettes on the making of the movie. Also on the extra DVD is a documentory of the real escape that was for the most part cheaply done and boring. I have viewed better documentories on the real escape in the past.
I would have liked to have seen more interviews from the cast members of the motion picture about their experiences making the film.
