Movie synopsis
Drew Barrymore and Justin Long star in this romantic comedy about a long-distance romance that may be worth fighting for. Garrett (Long) is still nursing the wounds from a recent breakup when he meets Erin (Barrymore), an unflinchingly honest girl with a big talent for bar trivia. Hitting it off immediately, the pair spend a romantic summer together in New York City. It was supposed to be a summer fling, but as fall approaches and Erin returns to San Francisco, the spark is still there. Subsequently dividing his days between working and hitting the bars with best friends Box (Jason Sudeikis) and Dan (Charlie Day), Garrett drops everything whenever Erin calls. The more Garrett's phone rings, the more his pals begin to suspect that their drinking buddy is taking the relationship a little too seriously. And they're not the only ones; Erin's sister, Corrine (Christina Applegate), is keen to ensure that her smitten sibling doesn't repeat the mistakes of her past, and she makes no attempts to sugarcoat the fact that she disapproves of the coast-to-coast romance. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and as the texting becomes more intense, both Garrett and Erin start to suspect that their summer fling may just be the real thing.

Editorial reviews

"[I]t's perceptive about the problems of young people torn between pursuing love or their nascent career ambitions, and the witty script, by first-timer Geoff LaTulippe, is spiked with refreshing profanity." -- Grade: B
A.V. Club - Scott Tobias (09/02/2010)

4 stars out of 5 -- "GOING THE DISTANCE is a winner...as enormously appealing as the couple at its center."
Box Office - Pam Grady (08/27/2010)

"[S]creenwriter Geoff LaTulippe's story of a recession-era long-distance relationship and its attendant hurdles takes its characters seriously."
Los Angeles Times - Michael Phillips (09/03/2010)

"[I]t has enough honesty and charm to set it apart..."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (09/02/2010)

"GOING THE DISTANCE is a light and tasty morsel of a romantic comedy in which two smart, funny, and basically sweet people try to conduct a cross-country relationship." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (09/10/2010)

"[T]he most convincing moments between real-life lovers Barrymore and Long are their tiffs....It's canny casting..."
Sight and Sound - Catherine Wheatley (11/01/2010)

"[Long and Barrymore] achieve a pleasant, sparky rapport, his quick wit finding a nice complement in her good-natured spaciness..."
Variety - Justin Chang (09/19/2010)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a worthy addition to the genre canon, with credit largely due to the support cast of Charlie Day and SNL's Jason Sudeikis."
Total Film - Ellen E. Jones (03/01/2011)

A romantic Comedy that is somewhat funny

Review For: Going the Distance (Blu-ray Disc, 2010, 2-Disc Set)

Drew Barrymore (Erin) and Justin Long (Garrett) meet in New York and hit it off, only problem is that Erin is only there for the summer as an intern for the local news paper and must return home to San Francisco in 6 week. After promising that they would not make a lasting relationship out of it, they eventually fall in love. When Erin moves back to California they begin a long distance relationship.

This is a classic long distance relationship type movie with all the expected bumps and twists and turns. Barrymore and Long work well together but they lack that "Couple" quality.

Overall it was a good movie, but nothing to hurry out to see and I would definitely rent this one and save the cost of the DVD for something better.

Surpisingly Entertaining

Review For: Going the Distance (Blu-ray Disc, 2010, 2-Disc Set)

I was quite surprised with this movie. I did not realize that it was going to be as funny and enjoyable as it ended up being. There are a lot of funny moments between Drew Barrymore and Justin Long to Christina Applegate and everyone and everything. It's funny romantic movie and I recommend it!

drew does it again

great movie, it is funny and a great romance. drew of course wants to be a reporter again. even though drew can be predictable she still has done some great movies. i laughed and it was a movie i did not have to worry about it being to sexual which is nice when you have children that get up in the night.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This was a really cute, warm movie about 2 people who meet by chance, fall in love, but live on the west coast & east coast. Drew is great in this movie & her chemistry with Justin is wonderful. So wonder they became a real-life couple...... I recommend this dvd & I'm so glad I bought it :)
